Thread: Need a little help.

I know when I see pictures of fish on my HB 899 side imaging unit when the fish are close under the beam in the blue area as the picture below shows. Where I am having trouble is seeing them out to the side. The fish seem to be harder to see when they are not close and in the blue area. Is there settings that will help seeing them out in the shaded outside area or am I just going to have to get stronger bifocals in my eye glasses. I would also like to see some sonar pictures of fish out in that outside shaded area to know what I am seeing or looking for and what distance is realistic for my 7" sonar screen I mostly run it on 40 on each side but would like to see out a little farther. Thanks in advance for the help.

Your picture seems washed out. A contrast change would be a big help in seeing fish against the lighter background.

To me it looks like you are a little hot on your sensitivity Since I do not look for structure only fish. I keep bottom darker so the white marks from fish will pop out more. When I am searching with SI I have my screen scroll speed higher so it will stretch fish marks making them easier for me to see them. Crappies and Sunfish are not that big and the higher scroll speed helps discern them from the bottom. Once I find fish then I will slow chart and come from different angle to define what the fish are relating to if anything I ALWAYS have my SI Enhance up so I can make immediate adjustments as bottom changes..

I usually run my sensitivity up on 12 and my contrast on 8. So by what I read so far I need to lower my sensitivity and increase my contrast to a higher number. Is this right.

And try the other color palettes ... blue is easy on the eyes but not very good at contrasting white fish echoes against the bottom detail ...

Gosh this is a good thread I have a hard time seeing them also. But I am learning more and more. Then I went from a 798, to a 898. Now that made a big difference, but last month changed to a Helix chirp G2N mega. Whole new curve ball.

Scrat .... IMHO, Blue is very good for DI, but I'm wondering if you set your unit to show SI in the "gold" or "blk/wht" ... but, "blue" on the DI section of the screen ... that you wouldn't have the best of both worlds ??

Thanks everyone for the ideas I will have to give all of these a try and see what will work best. Seems that when I get out on the lake I have all my attention on going fishing and draw a blank on what to do, try, or change on my sonar. Going to write me some notes down right now.

I know what you mean there. I have reading everything I can, writing it all down on a small note book to take out on the water with me. I tell ya I just can't remember nothing any more, had to print off the instructions for my scale as I forget how to use it.

Wow! Now I can see that. I'm going to have to try a different color palette next time out also as I have just always used blue.
