Wish I could give a good answer, or even a ballpark guess on this one. Surface clutter seems like it might be the only answer, but I don't think it is. So here's a guess completely pulled from the posterior area of a pair of Levis.......In order to stump everyone on this forum, Rickie hung a line with about 6 different size/density jigs off the front of his boat. He hung them so that they would be in the 2D cone only, and not be picked up on SI or DI. We see fish as both spots and streaks, indicating motion, but the 2D band is still. We only see it in 2D, which might mean it is blocking the cone only. And the fact that one of Rickie's quizzes has been posted for two days with only one response means he has succeeded in stumping us!

I'm thinking it has something to do with the 83/200 dual beam .....but don't know why the different colors......maybe the color pallet you are using?

I wish that humminbird, would do away with switchfire and just make the time variable gain user adjustable. Something like, 0°to 100° slide bar.

Altho I truely enjoyed vic's answer ... I'm going to give this one to Bob and Bean ... But with 2 separate explainations ...

Bean is correct in that the Surface Clutter setting is set such that the unit is not filtering out the surface clutter from the 2d image ...

Bob is correct in that the inclusion of the 83kHz 60° frequency choice is wide enough thru the upper couple of feet of surface water that the wider cone is picking up more surface clutter ...

The various colors just seems to be the color designation ONIX puts of the surface clutter for that pallette choice ...

    Very good guys ...

    I still like vic's answer
