Normally exterior is going to be better when properly mounted. When going thru the hull several other things have to be considered. Like type of finder, hull material, etc.

When you go to mount your transducer which placement is better thru the hull or exterior transom mount?

Here is info if you decide to use the "Shoot thru" style ...(this would apply to any brand ) ...
Installation & Networking Information Resource
*HB DI can be used as "shoot thru" ...
*Lowrance DI cannot be used as "shoot thru" ...
*HB SI nor Lowrance SI cannot be used as "shoot thru" ...

I prefer transom; especially for si but thru hull has its advantages in some applications. Mounting points (exact mount areas) are always of utmost importance. There are a lot of factors to be considered as the previous replies point out so well.
