Thread: DI question?

The common consensus is to keep the DI image chart speed about the same as the boat speed ...

.........if you are hovering over a brushpile, DI won't do you much good because the boat has to be moving in order to generate a usable pic. If you are only using the TM to get around, then a chart speed of 3....maybe 4 should give you a pretty good pic. If you fire up an outboard, you will have to increase the chart speed.

That's where I use 2D.

SS for when I'm looking for spots. DS when I'm examining a spot. 2D when I'm fishing a spot.

I don't know how others do it, but I keep an eagle eye on the FasTrack (Lowrance feature. Don't know the Bird equivalent) on the right side of my display so I can see the first bump off the bottom to avoid running over a brush pile or whatever I'm fishing. Once I find the edge with 2D on a fishy spot, I'll fling a marker up wind and make a mental picture of how it relates to the spot I want to fish once it settles.

We're sort of on the same page CatFan. When I'm easing up to a brushpile, I usually use a split screen with 2D and DI. The 2D cone will start to show the pile just a little sooner than the "slice" of DI. I don't know if I can call what I do "fishing" tho. I haven't come up with a name for it yet....snagging has already been taken. DeJigging might work....drop jig into the heart of a brushpile and jig around until snagged....break off....repeat. DeJigging!!

Get you some of these from Grousefly :

My preference is the Y-guard style (second from rt on top row). But I've also had good success with the brush style guard (top center).

Just got some of the brush style from bass pro 1/32 and 1/16. Did not know someone on here sold these. Will buy from him next time. Always willing to support a fellow member.

And the good thing about buying from a member who's a custom jig maker, is that you can have a greater amount of input on how the jig is made ... such as a bigger hook, different color hook, & different colors of weedguards.

Talk to Paul Mullins (Grousefly) to see what he can custom make for you ... but, I know he has hooks in gold, bronze, red ... weedguards in black or clear ... and he may have more choices than that. My current jigheads are 1/32 & 1/16 ballhead barbed -- both with #2 Aberdeen hooks (gold) and clear Y shaped weedguards (& fiber brush style guards). I also have 1/32 & 1/16oz ballhead barbed with #4 Aberdeen hooks (bronze) and black Y & brush weedguards, which I have no second thoughts about tying on. I just choose the jighead by hook size vs the size of the plastics I'm using, so that I have a good gap between hook point & top of plastic body.

Jigheads aren't the only thing Grousefly makes, either !! Just make sure to let him know that you're a member here, as he gives a discount to members. Just ask him about it.
