I'm guessing this is probably correct in that the "bait ball" was located closer to directly 90° under the xducer...which actually places the bait ball in the outer (lower) fringes of the SI beams ...where the strength of the left and right SI sound pulses are getting weaker...

Remember, the strongest part of the SI sound pulse is at 30° from horizontal ...

So if the bait ball were directly under the xducer...that places the bait ball 60° away from the strongest part of the SI sound pulses (left and right SI beams).....
