I mean, I hear people saying they like DI because it helps them interpret what the blobs & blotches are, of the 2d imageWAIT ... SAY WHAT ??
If you're using the DI image to tell you what you're seeing on the 2d image .... then what do you need the 2d image for, in the first place ??

You're going at this backwards IMHO ....To me, that's like taking a Disney animation film (Down Image) and running it next to a stick figure cartoon (2d) ... just so you know what the stick figure cartoon is supposed to be about, and how it should look.
