There is still 1 possibilty no one has listed ...and it has to do with the internal workings of the unit/xducer....

My guess is based on the readout of the fishfinder.
The angle of the sun to the water has nothing to do with how the sonar will look. Sonar is listening only to acoustical energy, not light or heat from the sun.
Well still no guesses on the last possibility (hardware related)...that can cause 1 side of the SI image to be brighter than the other...??

One side of the transducer could be starting to fail.
Mounted wopsided. Musta hit a stump and/or the xducer has old folks blockage.
Where there is nothing, you see nothing. Blip. blip. blip.

My theory is based on the signal being attenuated(loss), resulting in the echo return to be distorted. Like I said in the beginning, it was just a guess.
