I'm new to all the brand new electronics. I just bought a HB 688 DI which has the internal gps. I will be using the gps for not just fishing but duck hunting also. Will I experience the dreaded DONUT if I'm not moving or not moving fast?? If so is there something I can do or buy to add on to my unit so I won't experience it. Thanks for any help.

The position icon on the chart view will change from a boat shaped icon to a round circle icon at speeds below 0.6mph...

Unfortunately the AS GPS HS antenna is not compatible with the 600 series units...

The donut is not a complete disadvantage...the donut will continue to move on the chart as the boat moves on the water....

It's important to understand that the GPS satillites use movement of the receiver (antenna) is determining speed...the boat has to move a certain number of feet before the satillites recognise that the receiver "has actually moved"....

And due to the inherent inaccuracy of consumer GPS ...the boat has to move more than the EPE (Estimated Positon Error)...
Or the unit thinks that the boat didn't actually move...

This is the concept designed into the HB GPS...when the satillites can't recognise that the receiver has moved at least the distance of the EPE...then the unit processor displays a circle...meaning the receiver is waiting for enough data input to know if the boat has actually moved...

Then... Once the boat actually does move farther than the EPE...then the satillites recognise movement ...the satillites send the new data to the receiver...and then the unit "jumps" the circle to the latest confirmed position on the map...

So the donut still moves on the chart...but kind of in "small incremental jumps" as the boat moves past the EPE of the last known confirmed position...

Thanks for the education Ricky!!! I now have an understanding on how my HB's GPS works. Too bad my 600 series isn't compatible with the antenna upgrade. I'm thinking about getting another HB unit with SI and moving my 688 to the bow of the boat. Will all of HB's new SI units be compatible with the GPS upgrade?? If so, will the external gps receiver be far superior to my 688? Thanks again Ricky!!

Oh and sorry for so many questions but I'm new and don't know much about all the new technology. I'm trying to learn as much as possible bc I am bitten bad by the fishing bug.

The donut can be challenging, but when you put that donut around that way point you have arrived. I sure would like to try one of those HS gps units though.

The AS GPS HS antenna is (and will be) compatible with all the 800/900/1100 series units...
