I bought me an HB 998 about 9 months ago. I have not taken the time to really figure it out yet. I seem to want to fish more than figure the unit out. However what little time I have used it I am confused at times and amazed at times. I really only know when I am in 2d and SI view. I do not really know what the down imaging view is on there but I think I may have an idea. I get really good returns in deep water. I do not even really know how to set it up much. The brush shows up almost like a mirror image, I can see every little detail it seems. However, in shallow water say 8 feet or less I see nothing. I have tried adjusting the depth but it does not seem to matter. What shows up in deep water shows up really well. What is in shallow water does not show up much.
not really sure slab what should I be using
di is the best thing on a depth finder, most detail and by far the easiest to see what is there in my opinion
x2 clfarms1, had two DI units then switched the console unit out for the SI unit (with DI). DI is just like anything else its a tool but thats one tool I dont want to be without.

I used a wide beam Sat. in the 20 fow or less with DI after I found something I liked in SI. The DI, like these guys said will show all the detail ya need about the structure to include where the fish are at..ie in it, above it or hugging the bottom.
The reason I asked what beam was used is it seems that a narrow beam in 8fow or less, you could miss a piece of structure just to the side. You may be going just past something. The other thing I thought of you spoke of already...making sure the upper and lower range settings were right for that area.
Maybe one of the guys with more time on the unit will chime in and see if I'm on track or shooting in the dark.
use what works, my 998 gave me very poor results on the downscan, si was excellent
