false advertising?

... the first few screenshots I posted were pretty bad :Rofl

OK .. so they were digital camera pics of the unit in use, but still it was easy to see that I hadn't figured out how to get a good DI image (boat was stationary when pics were taken :Doh: )

But after playing around with the unit a time or two, and getting a SD card to take the screenshots on, I'm getting some pretty decent images from my Elite 5DSI.

Like for instance :

A tree on a ledge, just off a point -

A 20ft tall Cedar tree (ignore the mess on the right half of the screen, I turned the trolling motor to avoid hitting the Cedar with the big motor)

And, yes ... I know these last three screenshots are not works of art :Rofl ... and I'm not even sure how I got that color scheme entered on the unit ... but, the images leave little doubt as to what they are, and that's what matters to me !!

I'm still playing with the settings, experimenting every time I get out on the water, so there's no telling how good the images will get ... once I get more experience with this unit.

I'm just reposting kercha83's pics, I'm feeling better about my equipment with every screen shot !

Bad screenshots are not always a "newbie's" venue....

There are times (in certain water conditions and bottom compositions) that challenge even the most seasoned image gatherer...

I have dozens (probably hundreds) of screenshots that are not worthy of posting...

Take LOTS of screenshots ...and then just post the best ones...

If you see something really interesting...scan it from several directions with different settings and maybe 1 of the shots will turn out good enough to post...

HB users...learn to quickly delete the waypoint as soon as the shot is snapped so it doesn't clutter up your waypoint library...

Wait ... what ?? You mean HB's mark a waypoint everytime a screenshot is taken ??? Or are you saying mark a waypoint in order to scan the cover from different angles, THEN delete the waypoint after all the screenshots are taken ???

Yup...it marks a waypoint every time a screenshot is captured pappy...and it's a PAIN IN THE BOOBOO...!!

This has been on HB's Wishlist of changes ever since the beginning of the units capable of screenshots..

It totally amazes me at the amount of "complicated" Wishlist items HB has answered ...compared to the lack of "simple" Wishlist items like this.....(and more readout overlay control)...

Maybe someday...!?

Daaaaaannng .... that would be a pain !! I guess they never considered there'd be "Screenshot Wars" on websites like this .. :Rofl

Did they ever elaborate about why they thought that was a good idea ?? I can only guess that they figured "if the spot is interesting enough to take a screenshot, then it must be interesting enough to qualify as a waypoint" :dono ... not taking into account that the screenshot image may be of a school of baitfish or fish, and not necessarily bottom contour/structure or cover on the bottom. :Doh:

I'm wondering, too, if these "wishlist changes" will require the purchase of a new/upgraded unit or if a simple software update could make the changes being "wished for" ??

I would agree that HB probably thought the screenshot/waypoint connection would be a benefit for users...(instead of the aggravation it is)...

Now why they won't give us the option of "screenshot/waypoint" or "screenshot/no waypoint"...who knows...

HB has been very good about offering "Wishlist" items completed to as many units as the individual hardware in the units will allow...(and they do, in fact, complete a few here and there)...

How and why HB decides on which "Wishlist" items to complete...again...who knows...

I know KVD got his "Casting Rings" feature without delay....but yet.."more user control of overlayed and transparent Readouts" (requested by hundreds of HB users over 8.5 years of SI)...still seems to fall on deaf HB ears...

Personally I like the snapshot/waypoint feature. If I think something is important enough to take a picture of, it's important enough to mark a waypoint. It's a one step procedure rather than a 2 step procedure. Now if you want to remove the waypoint, it does take a second step. I imagine Lowrance requires 2 steps to mark a waypoint and then take a snapshot. I would probably be admiring the picture so much, I'd forget to mark the waypoint. :Rofl I actually use 2 machines, a Bird for sonar, and a Garmin for GPS, mapping and waypoints. That way i don't have to share screens. I'll use the Bird to stop the screen, and mark the waypoint. Then I'll mark the waypoint again with my Garmin, but correct the Garmin to the original Bird mark. As I would have traveled by the actual brushpile by the time I marked with the Garmin. Works well for me and if my waypoints in the Bird get cluttered, I just delete the works as I already have them on the Garmin.

That's kind of the point, you can take all the screen shots you want with lowrance, and you don't get a waypoint. If you want a waypoint you simply add one. I used to take snapshots of stuff that I had no intentions on fishing. Baitballs, structure, whatever, If I'd had a waypoint for every single image, I'd have maxed it out.

Having a single unit or shared units that pass the waypoint/mapping information to each other utilizes a great feature and simplifies things, rather than having sonar on one and having to depend on a non network unit for gps.
