Walking around the yard before dark I took some pictures of the fruit trees. Last year by now they were all stripped by the tornado that hit us, green fruit was everywhere on the ground. Some new Country Wine Blends may be in my future.

The Zaiger trees have been very difficult to grow due to their root stock's low/shallow/small root system. I think they are more designed for keeping pruned to 6ft in height which here on the coast doesn't work due to summertime steam from the ground. We have to let the tree get taller for fresh air flow to prevent disease.

This fig variety I had for years. The cuttings came from a fig tree in Caesar MS. The tree is over 50 years old. When the tree is mature the figs will turn yellow when ripe on the tree. Look how this variety sets braba crop. If tree ripened fruit is very sweet. In the cuttings I rooted last year was these 2 trees.



This is a Condaria fig 2 years old. Full of figs. These set a lot of fruit early too.
Some serious fig stuffing & roasting is on the horizon, yeah.

Bad year rooting figs for me. I had too much moisture in my fig pops and they rotted. Should poked some holes in bags. The Conadria fig that looked good, a raccoon or something dug it up the other night. I put it back in the pot but I don’t think it’s going to make it. To many roots ripped off.

I'm starting to believe the fig cuttings must be kept shaded the first season after rooting. Certainly direct sunlight on a black pot kills the fig roots. First I thought it was rot but now I think if the rooting area of the scion gets too hot it kills that area, why we can't save it. What rooting I do this next fall will be done in shade till the trees go in the ground or I have a shade house for them to grow out in. When we water the pot the water helps the solar heat reach the newly grown roots in my opinion. I kept all the trees on the trailer so only a few pots received direct sunlight at a time.

I have a cherry tree that is splitting. I will lose 1/3 of the tree. I have it tied to the main trunk for now. I hope to keep it viable until after it fruits this year. I will try to start some cuttings to start some more trees off of it. I thing it is too late to try and root some on the tree this year.

Bud now is the time to air layer your tree to clone. Air Layering is the easiest way to propagate. Lots of videos on YouTube covering the technique.

About your split, post a picture at the damage point so I can see what you have to work with. I saved plum tree with a piece of all thread, 2 flat washers, & 2 nuts.

I had not thought about all thread. I will load up some photos we I get out to the tree

Split at the roots. FIL planted it. Should have been pruned to one truck years ago. I did get a dozen pits off of it yesterday I will start those in the green house. I had a pretty good snack while cutting the grass. Cherries, blueberries and mulberries that the deer couldn't reach. The mulberries are sweet this year

Jack that is called a "Bark Inclusion" the joint at the stump had bark between the joint. You have to figure out which side is connected to the roots the best. Another thing you could do is summer prune the tops of both back removing weight to prevent further separation. If you go that route when you when you bind the tree together you need to bind it up high for extra leverage. When I'm pruning joints in trees if a bark inclusion is in the joint I choose the strongest side and remove the other. This is at a very young age to the tree, initial trunk and scaffold limb training stage.

In the picture is doesn't look like the leaves are drying out on either side. Without signs of stress and it was mine I would just take the weight off and bind it together.

Both sides seem very healthy. It has been a very wet spring here. I noticed I cutting further away from the tree. When I investigated I saw where it had opened up. I may be able to secure it really well and not have any problems with it. It had a full load of fruit on both sides. I managed to be the birds to some of them
