I was wondering if anyone made an aftermarket hand held control box that replaces the foot control? I met a guy at a tournament that said someone made one. Any help will be appreciated.

I have a friend who bought a homemade "wired" remote for his power drive. I am studing his and going to try to make me one. Will keep you up to date on the progress.
I'd like one of those too. Been looking at getting an extra foot pedal
and robbing some of the guts out of it, but ain't got around to it yet.
We have someone in Cochran that has made a lot of them for the old MK. I talked to him about it and he told me that you can't buy the cable without the circuit board attached. He said there is no problem making me one but that I would have to bring in the foot pedal and he would cut it off and wire to a hand box...Hate to not have a back up and foot pedals are pretty expensive..Can't say for sure but that's what I've been told anyway...I've even went so far as trying to find me a barely used or reconditioned motor so I can keep my current box.
Hey AUTiger, if you don't mind, could you ask him how much it'd cost?
If we sent him our Terrova pedal - if that's how he wants to do it.
Got a few more questions, minor stuff - I'd like to see a picture of one of
his hand-held deals. I've heard of them, think a guy in the club I used to
fish with has one, but I never got to look at it up close... Thanks! Jeff
See if you can get a picture of what they do. I may be willing to buy a pedal for conversion.
Thank you!
I was unable (so far) to get in touch with the man that makes them, but I talked with a friend of mine that has one. He says he paid $100 for his 2 years ago. I can try and take some pictures of it for you. Its not very big ( a little bigger than a pack of cigarettes) and he has it mounted on his armrest and loves it. I am still debating on whether or not I want/need one....Sure is tempting.
You guys are getting as bad as I am about "change". I am gonna take mine apart and put a bigfoot switch connection in it so I can put power to it with one foot via the bigfoot switch and steer it with the other foot. I am gonna disable the center on switch. Problem is, wal mart out of switches. Crap.
Ain't nothin' but a bunch of switches and a potentiometer in that foot pedal. I ain't took one apart, but I betcha.
Ain't nothin' to this stuff fellers.
Do Minn Kota sell the power/control cable separate?
If the speed pot is a slider type. you can measure the resistance of it on the pc board and replace it with a power trim pot. Rest is easy.
Took the powerdrive V2 foot control apart. What a bunch of cheese........
The reason I too it apart is because it is intermittent. No way to fix it.
Just as I thought. Membrane switches which are activated by a piece of plastic (lever) that squashes or slides over the membrane when you push the foot pedal.
If you guys wanna know/see how this one I got works, I will post some pictures and explain what happenin'.
Cane pole, i sell soap for a living. Enough said! I would rather pay someone to make it for me than me ruin part after part trying to make one myself. I figured it would probably be cheaper that way and maybe prevent holes in the walls from tools flying out of rage.
I see that a lot of you are talking about power drive units, but does this also work for Terrova models?
I talked to the man who makes these hand controls this afternoon. It is a simple box with 2 push buttons for left and right turns, 1 potentiometer for speed control, and an on/off switch for the CON/MOM switch. Its roughly
the size of pack of cigarettes. He sells them for $135 dollars and you have to supply him with your cord. I am too tight with money I guess, sounds rather pricey to me. But everyone I know that has one loves them dearly. I think I could make one a whole lot cheaper, but I am happy with what I have....It beats the heck out of cable driven TM's when it comes to trolling. If you need more info, let me know and I'll PM you with his name and phone number.
Tim
Like I said earlier,I'm in the process of building one of these for myself. I found two of the switches that I am going to use that will be different from the ones this guy is using(had a friend thats got one from cochran and took the cover off to see inside). 3 Postion Steerin Switch and Minnkota Foot Control Euro Style Con-On-Mom Switch. Found the black box at radio shack that he used for $2.69 I think. But with the switches I found I am going to have to use a thicker 2" box,as oppose to the 1",but oh well.I am also going to put a pushbutton on mine for the momentery button that the remote I saw does not have.Going to use the same cable off of my power drive.Once I get thru with it I will post pics for you to see.I think I am going to really like this thing once its done.Could not get these links to go live-sorry!:D:D:D
jabbo, what are you going to use for the speed control?
Rheostat.
You can cut the cable and wire in a new connector, leaving the original to connect to the TM and wire the new connector to the opposite end of the cable. Just make sure you are one to one with the connector wiring. A company called Cannon makes waterproof plastic connectors. You oughta be able to Google Cannon connectors up. Let me know. I might no be clear here myself. I can draw a picture.
Hey TNT,you can't work all the time. Got to have time to get ready for those fall slabs!!!!:D:D:D
Do you have an update Jabbo??
I have a hand control that Bill, owner of Fisherman's Friend, made for me years ago before MK came out with their hand control..I don't know if it has the same cable connection or not...It does have a 0-10 variable speed knob, an on-off mom switch and left-right switch..If anyone is interested I can get my secretary, Doris, to look it up in my inventory file and make a picture..
Bill made several of these units for folks in VA & NC..I think the cord is around 16-18'....
Yep DonG, I'm still interested - of course I am a tightwad, if I find one
that'll work I'll have to put it on wish list and go shake money tree :D
I'm surprised nobody's said anything about co-pilot.
Maybe everybody's got one and had same results as me?
Works ok except for speed control when tightlining,
trying to hover. To big a jump between speeds.
I've been steering with it, but keeping foot pedal laying up
on side of boat where I can reach speed wheel.
Works, but kinda clumsy.
by the pictures if this is what you are talking about....I had a PD, then a PDAP, then another AP, then another AP using this controller which was a big improvement...Then I went to the newer AP with remote...Had 3 of these...Did not like the remote for the same reason as stated in this thread..Went to a 3X hand control...Way too Big....So, back to a foot control...After havng all these TMs I have made the decision that I need a foot control with a handle attached to the foot control pedal and a quick release. It also needs to have a friction knob on the pedal & all the buttons on the handle...I think Tom can design one for me when I visit him in Nov...:D

Waiting on my two switches to get here so I can start assembling the remote, I've got everything else. As i stated earlier I think I am going to have to use a bigger box (5"x2.5"x2" as oppose to 4"x2"x1")so that I can get the switches I choose to go in the top as oppose to the side. But I am going to try to put them in the same size box even if I have to bend the leads on the switches alittle. We'll see. Also my remote will be exactly like the foot control:left and right, continous or momentary, 1k pot for the speed, and a push button for when I have it in mom. I just bought some new seats for my boat that have arm rest so I am going to make a bracket that will bolt to the bottom of the right one and probably velcro the remote to it. Can't wait to try it out. I will keep you posted and try to have some pics when I'm thru. Hey DonG thanks for the pics.
Yep, thanks for the pics Mr. DonG :)
I'm gonna see what all ya'll come up with, and go from there.
May buy something or try a build myself.
Jeff, the Terrova prob same control ckt as the V2. If I can help, let me know. We can take your apart and find out (if you trust me). I would bet they are the same control circuit in the v2 and terrova. Just maybe different cord.
Ain't no $125 worth of stuff there for sure. I can do some southern engineering.;)
This box has 0-10 on Pot, momemtary on, constant on & left-right switch....
Tom or Jeff let me know if you would like to monkey with this thing...Is the cord plug-in still the same?
Can't beat the price I'm charging.....Tom has a Birthday soon & then he will be a old as me..:D..Can't beat the 39 Models..:)
For Tom:::: Birthday Present
For Jeff::::: Ride in your boat and pull Bandits...I'll be as polite as Rusty..:D
Ummm, Terrova plug different, it's little round plug with screw-down
lock collar... forget 'zactly how many pins it has, but maybe more.
It got autopilot button on foot pedal.
Either of you '39 models welcome to fish with me anytime, it's an honor :D
Cane Pole, when you figure it out, I will be willing to purchase one from you if you're selling.
Great pictures DonG! That is exactly what I am looking for, but with the terrova plug configuration. The person I spoke with several months ago told me he got his from a gentleman at Fisherman's Friend, but all I can find on the internet is a hand lotion:confused::confused:
