I'd drop the crickets and use artifical baits. We catch just as many with less mess and it's way cheaper too!:)
4 dollars a hundred. Thats what I'm paying for um.
$3.50 for 100 in Illinois.
Gary theres a place in Savannah you can or could buy them by the Thousand.
Pete
$4 a hundred in Birmingham.
Although at this time of year I order them by the box of a thousand for 13.95 plus shipping from fluker farms.
You can do a search on line for cricket boxes..
Basically it is pretty simple. Mine is a plywood box, with metal foil tape up high so they can't get to the top. I have a hinged door on top with wire mesh screen. And I have a 40 watt light wired in to keep the box warm and to provide me light to catch crickets.
Oscar
NIMROD you got it, i tie my own, much cheaper, and catch just as much, although i have had to go to live bait a few times ,when they would not take nothing but .
my wife fishes live bait most of the time and i catch more then she does .
we fish with fly rods only,i got her to use atificials this weekend ,i thank is done with live bait now, maybe.
I've never done it but ordering them is alot cheaper. You can order for like $10(includes shipping) for 500. Or breed them that would be easy also.
A cheap alterative is using part of a plastic trout worm. Walmart sells them in a small pack. They are bright colored plastic worms a little fatter than spagetti. We use pink ones on a small fly type leadhead under a cork. A package lasts several trips and the cost is under a dollar per package.:D
Yea, I'd be interested in seeing that and getting alittle more info on them. Its just hard for me to believe that artificial bait is as good as the real thing (for bluegill and the like) but then again I've always used real crickets or worms so I don't have anything to compare too.
Bluegill
We are paying about $1.50 per 100 here in SE Ga. But I only live about 40 minutes from Armstrong's Crickett Farm in Glennville Ga.
If you're fishing the beds where the fish are shallow and aggressive, artificials work very well. The rest of the year, though, I think live bait is just unbeatable for bluegills and shellcrackers.
I abandoned crickets over ten years ago. They're great bait, but they're too fragile and too expensive. You can buy mealworms or maggots by the thousand at much better prices. Both will outlive crickets with minimal care, and are tougher on the hook (especially maggots.)
hey disco, where do you get yoiur meal worms and maggots?? what are the costs of them??
doc :)
What's going on with Grubco, they've been off line for a while and haven't seen them as a spondser here?.

Grubco is still a site sponsor. The Sponsor ad banner (top right corner of page) cycles thru the Sponsors, with each change of page ... so you might only see them come up every 5th or 6th time you move to another page on the site.
Dale Cochran is a real nice feller, and easy to deal with. If the online store is down for maintenance, there are other ways to contact him :

Tell him I sent you, or at least tell him you're a Crappie.com Member, when you contact him. Using the banner ad link, to order from them, is the best way to insure that they stay site Sponsors (and help support the site).
Check on the Grubco website, for information on how to keep your bait ... (I was looking thru it and noticed a mention of using an aquarium to keep your crickets in ;) ... not a bad idea !! Also, I've noticed at shops that sell them ... they use the paper fiber egg cartons (shelter), slices of potato (food), and a very shallow jar top with water (water). A light bulb keeps the temp at the 75-80deg temp required for growth.
Note: they are messy, smelly, and noisy :p ... so, "where" you keep them should be considered, with these things in mind ;) Cleaning the cages/boxes/etc is necessary, to keep them in good health. Might even be a good idea to have a screen covered droppings pan, that fits in the bottom of your cricket holding cage. It would make removal of the droppings & debris, a little easier/quicker.
... cp
I have never seen those trout worm's at wal mart.I would be interested in those also.
The two best sources I know are Grubco and Vados:
www.grubco.com
www.vadosbait.com
I haven't ordered any mealworms for awhile, but I usually pay $8-$9 per thousand for maggots (including shipping.) Mealworms might be a little cheaper than that.
My local Walmart also carries trout and crappie magnets. I am going to try one tonight. I was also thinking about adding rubber legs on mine to see how the fish like them.
Mary
ebay has them.
Walmart sells crickets here for $2 a hundred. Check ot the cricket keeper from KEEPERSMFG.COM Only wish Walmart would sell wax worms too.

Nothing more than a tiny leadhead and a section of trout worm (plastic). Did'nt see that peice of lint from my pocket on the jig before. Shows how blind I'm getting. LOL
I bought crickets yesterday for $3.00 a hundred.
We caught some Bream yesterday on the Trout Worm jigs again. The wind was bad and lots of folks pressuring the small lake. We kept about 40. Fillets are small but good. Wound up having 5 lbs of fillets for the freezer.:D
