Thread: Price Of Crickets

Yea, I'd be interested in seeing that and getting alittle more info on them. Its just hard for me to believe that artificial bait is as good as the real thing (for bluegill and the like) but then again I've always used real crickets or worms so I don't have anything to compare too.

We are paying about $1.50 per 100 here in SE Ga. But I only live about 40 minutes from Armstrong's Crickett Farm in Glennville Ga.

If you're fishing the beds where the fish are shallow and aggressive, artificials work very well. The rest of the year, though, I think live bait is just unbeatable for bluegills and shellcrackers.

I abandoned crickets over ten years ago. They're great bait, but they're too fragile and too expensive. You can buy mealworms or maggots by the thousand at much better prices. Both will outlive crickets with minimal care, and are tougher on the hook (especially maggots.)

Check on the Grubco website, for information on how to keep your bait ... (I was looking thru it and noticed a mention of using an aquarium to keep your crickets in ... not a bad idea !! Also, I've noticed at shops that sell them ... they use the paper fiber egg cartons (shelter), slices of potato (food), and a very shallow jar top with water (water). A light bulb keeps the temp at the 75-80deg temp required for growth.
Note: they are messy, smelly, and noisy :p ... so, "where" you keep them should be considered, with these things in mind Cleaning the cages/boxes/etc is necessary, to keep them in good health. Might even be a good idea to have a screen covered droppings pan, that fits in the bottom of your cricket holding cage. It would make removal of the droppings & debris, a little easier/quicker.

I haven't ordered any mealworms for awhile, but I usually pay $8-$9 per thousand for maggots (including shipping.) Mealworms might be a little cheaper than that.
