Taters, & puppies ... good choices. Cole slaw, I'm not too crazy about.
Possible subs -
Mashed Cheesy Potatos, in place of Steak Fries ?
Pan Fried Cornbread, in place of Hushpuppies ?
Kale Greens,or Fried Green Tomatos, in place of Cole Slaw ?
Hey ... they've all worked for me :p

The only kind of cole slaw I like is freshly made. My son will sit and eat a whole head of cabbage of it. I've got a smoker for barbecuing pork and freshly made cole slaw on a nice big barbecue sandwich is the best.
mmmm Fried green tomatos. That reminds me it's time for me to start getting the garden ready. Now if I could just ever get a day off work to start on it. Shouldn't even have to use the tiller since it's rained for about two weeks straight now :)
If I am lucky some morell Mushrooms:D:D
I have got to find me some Morells..I have been reading about them on the forum...and I gotta find some. Are they mostly found during a wet spring time?
Coleslaw is pretty standard for us, but here are a few other things we serve up:

onion rings
salt potatoes

Being from a German background on one side:) we tend to stay away from the mayo and make our slaw with vinegar/oil/sugar. Turnips makes a good slaw. Then there is the favorite of sliced cucmbers and onions in the same brine as the above slaw. If you cut cucumbers lenghtwise and batter 'em they fry up real nice. If you have never fried up sweet potato chips they are great! We mix up bisquick and water and egg and a little oil and make a hoecake in a cast iron skillet. Add real butter and fig preserves. Honey heat up the grease will ya!
Green beans, potatoe salad or mashed potatoes.
Last night we just had saffron rice and huge pile of fish fillets.
Depending on how much you want. For the two of us we usually shred a half a head of cabbage at a time. Then equal parts of oil, white vinegar or apple vinegar and sugar. make enough brine to moisten the cabbage. If you make too much you can always add more cabbbage. It is always better the next day when it has had some time to absorb the vinegar and sugar. Enjoy!
If you slice cucumbers across and add about two parts onion and one part cukes you have another good salad. Black pepper and a little salt.
Our Coleslaw is made different. We shred cabbage , onion, and carrots. Add sugar, vinegar, and celery seeds to salad dressing or mayo. That is gooood stuff.
We love baked beans and fries too. Lots of Crappie fillets rolled in Yellow Corm Meal fried up golden brown.:D That White Corn Meal just does'nt give the appealing color to the fish to me.;)
Try,
fried green tomatoes
