went out last night with lasordoc to drop some structure. man I love this unit. the only problem I had is I was getting a big rooster tail going across the lake. Not sure if I need to raise it up or lower the transducer down.

Mine also sprays about 4-5 high but it reads great at high speeds so I decided to leave it alone. No since in putting more holes in my boat over a little spray.
I have not used my 997 many times but have found a boat that was sunk in about 8' of water. It was as clear as it could be. I am going to have to buy a card for it so I can take some pictures.
yea it reads great at high speeds I just dont want to put to much presure on it to make it break the mount. I have a little adjustment up and down to play with other than that I think I will leave it where its at, the less holes the betterQuote:

The mounting instructions for my 997c SI is quoted below.Quote:

By using the template to determine where to mount the transducer, you have about 1/2 inch of play up or down. When mounting with the screws located in the middle of the bracket slots, the bottom of the transducer will be slightly below the bottom of the boat. If the transducer is installed level This will not allow the water to be forced over the top and cause the "ROOSTER TAIL".
The instruction manual says that the best side images are when going between 2 to 6 MPH.

mine talks to me , wait or is it the voices in my head, mine works fine at any speed it seems. no rooster tail problems and it doesnt hang below the bottom of the boat, i have more issues with the 797 on my trolling motor then the one i have on the transom, but still great pictures anyway

ok fellows ive made up my mind. Im getting the new side scan sonar. the problem i have is, i cant understand whats going on in the pics. I will study this thread some more and see if i can understand it better. Im a Garmin man but willing to purchase another high end unit like the bird, if wife lets me :)

just like looking over shoulder either way with no water behind you. I had trouble until i went out with it

You put it in the most logical place. Where it works. I know what you mean about yahoo groups. WASTE OF TIME! I saw a few pictures of step mounts. They would only work when going slow. They ain't so smart. They don't know anymore about this stuff than anyone here that has used SI.Quote:

Nice bracket - though I would be worried about causing a cavitation bubble in front of the propeller with the transducer mounted there which could cause the propeller to blowout. Hey if it works for you than that’s great. I assume you do get high-speed readings than and if so at what speed is "high-speed"? Most fishermen don’t ever say anything when something works (transducer mounting or other) but they sure do when something doesn’t work! It would help if the Yahoo Si Group folks, or anyone else for that matter, would also post how there Si units worked after they have mounted the transducers. This could than be used by anyone else who may have the same or similar boat and would let tham know that the transducer was mounted for low speed operation only.
Since that Si transducer costs about $200 to replace it, many mount it up higher on the transom so that it will be more protected and also install one of the High-Speed Side Imaging Kits (Si-HSK). This consists of an inside-the-hull DualBeam Plus transducer and a transducer switch. They switch to the inside-the-hull transducer for sonar readings at high-speeds since the Si cannot update fast enough to show good detail at high speeds and than flip the switch back when they want to chart an area.
Welcome to the site Greg. We appreciate anything you can bring to the table. This is the best unit I’ve seen and I’m around this stuff every day. And yes, there is still room for improvement. You’ll hear the good the bad and the ugly. Hopefully you’ll take our thoughts back to HB. The unit works good up to 44mph. that as fast as I can go. I looked into the second transducer and switch but didn’t you say in one post that you need to go into the units setting and change it when you switch? If not I’ll give that a try. I’m also working on building a shim for the transom so it can set square. I don’t think it would take an engineer long to design an adjustable transducer bracket for the transom. That would be one nice feature. Once again welcome
Crip47, welcome back is more like it. Work at the job and home has kept me from helping out here and other places. I should always be available by e-mail though.
Here’s the deal with the additional transducer, switch and menu: you can leave the unit in the Side Imaging transducer selection setting (“Hi-Def Sidescan”) and simply flip the switch for high-speed readings but you must be aware that anything you see on the Si sonar will be junk. If you don’t want to see this than change the Transducer select menu setting to “Dual Beam” menu setting and you will not have any of the Si sonar Views available, so you won’t see the junk Si readings.
There is always room for improvement and I take all suggestions as such. The design folks, Engineering and Marketing all get e-mail messages from me with suggestions for new features, functions and even accessories. The problem with accessory suggestions is that if the powers-that-be don’t see a return on investment – they won’t happen. One day I will retire and start producing a line of aftermarket sonar accessories!
Humm. Greg, i would say it would be wise to have a rep. at Reelfoot @ classic and have them bring at least 20, 997 si transducers because they gonna need em.
