Thread: first trip with 797si pics

went out last night with lasordoc to drop some structure. man I love this unit. the only problem I had is I was getting a big rooster tail going across the lake. Not sure if I need to raise it up or lower the transducer down.

Mine also sprays about 4-5 high but it reads great at high speeds so I decided to leave it alone. No since in putting more holes in my boat over a little spray.

I have not used my 997 many times but have found a boat that was sunk in about 8' of water. It was as clear as it could be. I am going to have to buy a card for it so I can take some pictures.

yea it reads great at high speeds I just dont want to put to much presure on it to make it break the mount. I have a little adjustment up and down to play with other than that I think I will leave it where its at, the less holes the better

My 797 xducr is about an inch below the step. I have a step hull Bass Tracker.
The first sonar (X47 Lowrance) would loose lock at high speeds. Don't have problem with 797 loosing lock where it is mounted on the step and at high speeds (that is if you call 34 mph high speed). It don't squirt out rooster tails mounted here either.

The 797 is a lot more powerful than the X47. Well, $100.00 vs $1200.00. It oughta do something besides sit on its perch and paint pictures. Oughta talk to us and tell us where the fish are located. I am working on this...ha

The mounting instructions for my 997c SI is quoted below.

"Hold the template on the transom of the boat in the location where
the transducer will be installed. Align the template vertically,
matching the lower edge of the transom with the bottom corner of
the template. If your propeller moves clockwise as the boat moves
forward, mount the transducer on the starboard side, and use the
bottom left corner of the template. If your propeller moves counterclockwise
as the boat moves forward, mount the transducer on the
port side, and use the bottom right corner of the template."

By using the template to determine where to mount the transducer, you have about 1/2 inch of play up or down. When mounting with the screws located in the middle of the bracket slots, the bottom of the transducer will be slightly below the bottom of the boat. If the transducer is installed level This will not allow the water to be forced over the top and cause the "ROOSTER TAIL".

The instruction manual says that the best side images are when going between 2 to 6 MPH.

mine talks to me , wait or is it the voices in my head, mine works fine at any speed it seems. no rooster tail problems and it doesnt hang below the bottom of the boat, i have more issues with the 797 on my trolling motor then the one i have on the transom, but still great pictures anyway
