Wondering if anyone has tried tying fly patterns on a jig head? Would be a lit of work just to lose them to a stump but might be real fun. I have a ton of different stuff now...more than I'll ever use and think I;ll try this one.Attachment 397773

They are always tough to loose but fish'em. You did a beautiful job on that one for sure.
It would cost to much per jig to lose first cast in brush..... :Rofl
Some of those fancy feathers are expensive!
Ya. I didn't make that one but will try when I get home in June. My wife and I live in St Lucia West Indies now but love crappie fishing. I bought out a collection from a fly fishermen and have a ton of stuff. Sold some and got my money back. Was home in Ohio for 7 months after Covid started and got hooked on tying. But want to try something different so been watching tying videos for different flies and want to try them on jig heads. Still collecting....its an addiction now. Selling rabbit strips to pay for my habit.
Should work. A jigheads is just bigger than a thread or bead head. If you have the materials it would be fun to try.
I use fly patterns a good bit in my jig tying when I experiment. At least I sue to fly tying materials in my jig tying at times, like a nail from a Jungle Cock cape on each side for eyes.
I also tie some flies and will fish with fly rod for Bluegill or what ever will hit when I want to have fun.

Skip, do you think it makes a difference to add the extra? I know crappie are not trout but I have to believe that they are not just stupid fish that eat anything. Or maybe they are?
Like that jungle cock.
Man, beautiful ties, Skip! I really like the 4th one, and the ant looks super!

Thank you guys!
Ksnouf I am not sure about that, have even wanted to experiment with jigs like I tie and leave the flash off. I use to catch bigger crappie every year for like 10 years at least one 17” or larger. Have caught some close since I started using flash, but no 17” or larger. Don’t know yet if that makes a difference or not. Seems just trying different things is a good thing to do and see. I would think there are some types we are not tying that will work very well.
I am big on experimenting!

Plus the fun and satisfaction of catching a fish on something you created!

I'd start with something simple like a wooly bugger jig before trying salmon flies. They look cool but whoever tied the one in the picture is very experienced, plus patterns like that take time and patience, something I don't personally have. For me, if it takes more than five minutes to make I don't bother with it.
Hey Jim good to hear from you...really liked you post back a while on propeller spins. You make some great jigs. I have collected so much stuff I want to experiment to make something that is different. This is really addictive. Someone should have told me that I could have saved money by buying jigs at $10 a piece instead of spending $1000s tying my own.
When tying dry fly patterns flip the hook over in the vise or it won't look right in the water.
Thanks Fatman I see what you mean. I know you have everything in the world and have been making jigs for a long time. I bet you have tried everything. Would like to see some off the wall creations.
You folks are kinda of late to the party. Lols.
The fly fishing community has gravitated to tying and fishing many fly patterns on jig hooks for a number of years now. They use smaller jigs on 8-16 size jig hooks, first used in Euro competition fly fishing and its now pretty much mainstream in the fly fishing community. Look for "Euro" or "competition" patterns. Streamer fishing with weighted fly/jig patterns is becoming very popular with fly fishing gear.
There are some interesting YouTube videos showing how to cast jigs using fly rods. Why not just use a spinning rod?

From another jig fishing group on FB:
"Really really good podcast from April Vokey interviewing the Godfather Kelly Galloup. Lots of insights and details. One of the reasons I like Galloup so much is his innovation... and the reason he is so innovative is because he doesn't put himself in a fly "box". He doesn't limit himself as a so-called purist. He, many times in other conversations, flat out admits that gear fishermen are far more efficient than fly guys. Kelly crosses over, takes what works from gear guys and adapts it to fly fishing. That out-of-the-box thinking has made him what he is today... a success."
Been fishing this way with jigged streamers for a few years now. Enjoy it immensely especially when fishing among the purists! [emoji23]

Great video. Looks like some of the plain Jane stuff I tie.
Skip, you are correct. On a jig the may fly would have to orient that way. On a dry fly hook it would go on the other side. When the fish are feeding on may fly hatches I doubt it matters how it is orientated unless it is a trout.
I have been looking at the things that the fly tiers tie up for some time. Here is one based off a tie. Attachment 399173

I tied three very close to this when I lived in TN and was looking for good gills and crackers. Worked excellent once I started putting it where it belonged and leaving it alone, letting it do the work. Never had a banner day but it exceeded my expectations. I do t do enough dubbing but it isn’t hard and has its applications. Very nice jig and color choice IMHO.
Good looking jigs
deceiver fly patterns on a jig hook are awesome right now.
Lots of detailed work there
