Best (scented >?) Plastic Cricket for Gills.

I have a new Friend who fishes Bluegill....New Friend > Yahoo- lol. I am interested in buying some plastic crickets like the Gulp crickets... I am looking for help on fishing ponds for gills(pms accepted-lol).. What company or ebay seller sells good plastic crickets or other baits that would catch some fair size Bluegills. I am looking for instant help to get me in the Ballgame. Plastic creature/ company or maker address / hook/ hooksize and float.. Thanks to those willing to hare their hard earned secrets. :fish

Berkley PowerBait Power Honey Worm

Almost any small (1/64 or 1/32 oz) jig or fly will catch bluegill.

Trout magnet, beetle spin, crappie sliders, etc. work great. Any Walmart will carry these or something similar.

I haven't used the Gulp Alive Crickets personally, but did see a video of a guy doing a comparison using them along side live Crickets for BG. The live Crickets did very well, as expected, but the Gulp Crickets caught hardly any fish at all in that video. Don't know how conclusive this is though?

The Gulp Minnows however, as ketchn has stated, are a very effective, proven BG bait.

Mister Twister Micro Craw. Not a cricket, a little crawfish, but the bream seem to love them. I use a 1/32 oz jig with a #6 hook, or smaller, like a 0.5 g Daiwa Gekkabijin with #10 hook. For scent I use slab sauce or a tiny piece of Berkley power wiggler.

Mister Twister Micro Craw- Chartreuse/black
Trout Magnet- Bison or Bulldog
Gulp Alive! 1” minnow- ALL colors
Euro tackle Anisoptera- brown or black
Gulp Alive! 1” leech

i have tested the gulp cricket , the gulp worm and the gulp minnows , the gulp minnows are by FAR the best of the 3 , the crickets were totally a waste of money and the worms were on their best day ONLY if you were desperate .:Rofl

Yep, the consensus seems to be that the Gulp minnow is the only one that seems to work.

I'll add one more voice for the Gulp Alive 1 inch minnow. It's amazing how well these work.

I use a #6 Octopus hook tied directly on the line 8 inches above a 1/8 oz drop shot weight. Work it
slowly across the bottom. A friend of mine and I caught over 300 bluegill in one day fishing
spawning beds this year. Chartreuse shad color is our favorite but other colors catch well too.

Thanks Everyone who saved me $$ and time watching a still bobber (float-lol) with the gulp crickets.. I will picked up some Gulp 1 inch minnows and some micro craws...colors ? . Thanks for the hook suggestions too- that is big time tip seeing i usually use a 3/0 or 5/0......rotfl

I would go with the natural color, but remember those aren't scented, so you need to keep it moving so the fish thinks it's alive.

I would guess that you use a Palomar knot so the hook sticks straight out from the line....??. . . . How did the Farmer find his Wife ?? . . . . . . . . . He Tractor

I used to do that with a Palomar knot. but I found out I got a lot better results when I attached the hook with an inch-and-a-half surgeon's Loop and let the hook dangle and swing freely out from the main line. I had a much better hookup ratio.

You can also do the same thing with a floating rig setup. But instead of using a lead weight at the bottom, just use a small jig. You just have to incorporate the jig into the surgeon's knot while you are making the loop. Now you'll have two baits in the water,I catch doubles with this float rig all the time.

I would recommend Chartreuse Shad, Emerald Shiner, Black Shad. In that order.
Likely you won't need anything other than Chartreuese Shad.

One tip on using this bait, other than using the downshot rig I mentioned earlier in this thread --

When opening a jar -- After you take the black plastic lid off you will see a foam
gasket sealing the jar. Do NOT take this completely off. Just enough where you
can poke your finger in there to get a few of the baits out. Then lay the foam gasket
back down and then close the jar with the black plastic lid.
Reason for this -- THESE JARS LEAK if you peel the foam gasket off completely and
then put the black plastic jar lid back on without it.
