Whatcha think? It sure was fun fighting it!
Looks like a red ear crossed with another fish species.
I've caught some that looked like that. I just assumed it was a redear with a bit more yellow in it.
It looks like it has some green sunfish in it.

Looks like a male Redear to me ...
Pretty fish no matter his lineage :biggrin
I'm thinking his Momma and Daddy did a little straying from their bloodlines.
I does have an unusual coloration
I agree with you guys.... looks like a redear/Pumpkinseed mix. Anyways, thought I'd share for all to enjoy!

green sunfish on one side for sure , possibly bluegill on the other .
for whatever reason when those 2 cross they often have a red tipped ear and EVERYONE automatically says redear cross
for sure its a hybrid though and not a straight run sunfish and yes sir them hybridized sunnies FIGHT well.
I have a pond full of bluegill / green sunfish natural crosses I been fishing in for years .
my 3 cents
I'm going with redear x pumpkin. The mouth area looks like a pumpkinseed as well as the operlecular flap. The body looks like a redar.
I had to look that fancy word up. It don't exist and then I realized it was just a simple typo mistake. Then I educated myself and then I decided to disagree with you but respectfully of course. Sent from my E6810 using Crappie.com Fishing mobile app
Thx everyone for your thoughts....I agree Ketchn, I thought it was a bass til it got closer. I hope to catch some more, will post if I do....
Beautiful fish!! Thanks for sharing.
Did you get any size or weight dimensions? Looks like a healthy individual

because I ketch hundreds of them in a large pond that ONLY has greens and bluegill and they hybridize like crazy in there typically look highly similar to that fish
of course depending on how many times they cross and what the percentage of outward appearances they retained from either parent it can vary tremendously
but for sure one of the parents/grandparents on that fish is about positively a green sunfish.....
the other side could be something other than bluegill maybe red ear or pumpkin seed or some other sunfish as the ear flap is really vibrant
but note the color on the straight green sunfish ear flap ….it reddens lots more on the crosses in Texas waters….just saying :highfive
one thing for certain , once they cross that line its a toss as to what the appearance will be and most especially down the road a few generations …..
Greenfish....it was close in size to this one. My shoe is 12". As you can see, there are a few different types in this small retention pond. I agree, it's definitely colorful!
that fish is also hybridized brother , looks a lot more like a gill/green cross than the first fish
my 3 cents , sure are fun when they are hybridized , fight like big dogs
KABOOM is the word
Attachment 374350 Totally agree they fight like crazy! Caught this one yesterday....looks to be a true redear.
Could be a regional thing in "name calling", about a month ago I caught that identical fish in Florida, never see the gill veins so colorful blue down here w/ red tick on ear, sure reminded me of pumpkin seeds caught on trips to Wisconsin.....2 cents...dono......

FUN is the word as far as what it is. LOVE it when you get into those in numbers with light tackle! Plus they eat up really well when you do them whole!
Pumpkinseed

Almost looks like it has some pumpkin seed in it but most likely a redear with its larger mouth:

Do straight-up redears have the blue rays in the area under the eye and behind the mouth?
After looking at many pictures and the zoologist description I believe they are just one of many types of redear sunfish that can have different appearances, the one below typical:
REDEAR SUNFISH (LEPOMIS MICROLOPHUS)
- Small mouth relative to body size
- Upper jaw extends to the front of the eye
- Dark opercular flap with red to orange margin color
- Inflexible opercular flap
- Brown spotting forming a mottled, or checkered, pattern
- Pectoral fins are elongated, reaching past the eye when folded forward
LONGEAR SUNFISH (LEPOMIS MEGALOTIS)
- Upper jaw extends to the center of the eye
- Blue to teal stripes extend form mouth to opercular flap
- Flexible, dark opercular flap with thin red or white margin
- Pectoral fins are short and do not reach the eye when folded forward
- Males can have blue to teal dorsal fins
- Very small mouth
Green sunfish are different than most sunfish and may also have teal stripes from mouth to flap
- Relatively large mouth (closer in proportion to a lm bass)
- Lower jaw extends to the middle of the eye
- Opercular flap is black with white margin tipped in yellow, orange or red
- Pectoral fin is short and rounded
- Pectoral fin does not reach beyond the eye
Thx for all the responses....the colors these fish possess is too kewl!
