Perch eat well. Just watch their gill plates. Sharp as razors.
12" is very good. That's approaching about as big as we get them around here. For Russell and Clarks Hill, my best ones have weighed around 1.5 lbs, and you often catch a bunch of smaller ones for every one that size.
Complete agreement on the gill plates. When I show kids a white perch's weapons, I squeeze their stomach (the fish, not the kid's...lol) to cause the needle sharp dorsal spines to rise up. But then I show them that the fish's best defense is the cheek gill plates. Amazingly sharp. It's worth wrapping an old rag around them to unhook them if you're in a bunch.
Lastly, the bottom fish with the faint lines could almost pass for a white bass. Perch typically have only the lateral line with out stripes. Interesting.
Thanks for such a thorough response. My dad and I wore out the white bass at Greenwood 3 years ago . I wish there were a stable population around the Lake Wylie area

Keep in mind that the White Perch is not a perch at all, but a member of the same family as the Striped Bass and White Bass. In it's natural habitat it closely mimics the Striper in that it is anadromous and comes into fresh water estuaries to spawn. This is a popular fishery in coastal NC and Virginia when they make spawning runs.
Like the Striper it has flourished in fresh water reservoirs and threatens Crappie and White Bass populations because they multiply rapidly and feed on fry of other game fish.
They largely accounted for the demise of the White Bass fishery in the Santee Cooper lakes and most likely others as well.
If big enough to fillet, they are good table fare but the skin and any red line needs to removed to avoid a fishy taste.
It's that big enough part that's the problem. Most schools run similar in size and there are a blue million of 5 to 8 inches ones everywhere.
12" fish are decent size and should make for a good dinner.
What's a purple lipped perch?
