Second Limit Longlining

Not convinced yesterday wasn't an accident I unloaded the boat at the crack of dawn this morning and headed up the lake. Bite wasn't as fast and furious this morning but the ratio was better, 4 to 1 I'd say. A few minutes after 10 I have another limit in the box and headed for the trailer.
Switched to a yellow line today instead of clear and it sure helped these old eyes, also did some stuff with different weight jig heads and had less tangles.
Managing poles to me is the hard part but it is coming together fairly good.

Reese two days in a row you got to be the man, I'm still having trouble being able to get the crankbaits at the depth that they need to be and choosing colors, so thanks for the article and the pictures

Congrats. Are you pulling out the back or front. My boat just not big enough to sit on back? Mono or braid? 6 lb or ?

Off the front, trolling motor shaft is too short to pull off the back and I prefer the front anyways.

One of my better fish came from way back!!! I relined my reels yesterday and when I started spooling one of them I had a loop hanging down on the spool, it was about half way spooled when I saw it so I decided to spool it on up and deal with it this morning. Threw it out and left the bail open, it was almost to the bottom of the spool when the loop clear and I tripped the bail. The pole immediately bent double and there I was with a 14 inch crappie over 600 feet back, my arm was wore out!!:yikes

Good going. Sounds like you've got it figured out. Are your rod holders set up on the front like you'd use for spider rigging? I run 16, 14, 12 and 10 foot poles while pulling and rarely have any tangles, unless a catfish gets on one, but when I'm pulling jigs I move my holders to the sides of the deck. The rods stick out basically 90 degrees from the boat. With 2 people I pull one set on front deck and one on rear deck. First time I went longlining was with Slabprowler and that's how he had his set up, so I copied his method and really like it. I've fished who with 2 people fish one on the front deck and the one on the back deck fishes straight behind the boat. I don't like that setup as well as one fishing off each side.

Both off the front with the rods at 90 degrees.
I figure putting them back in place is where most of my problems are coming in play.

If it takes that many feet out I'm going to have to buy some electric reels. My arms would give out. Lol

To me totally different, I can turn on a dime cranking, not so much pulling jigs. Line out is another issue but you got to go with the flow on that.
Figuring out your jig weights can be a factor too.
Time in the seat is the only way to get it, I've talked to folks about this for 3 or 4 years, finally just put the cranks up and went at it.

I like it to. I finialy went to pushing double jugs like you would cranks. Long lining I think is good on days where the fish are scattered and you can make long pulls. You're definitely burning them up. I like the pictures.

Oh yeah, may not this summer tho.

I was just talking the other day about how long lining should work with where the thermocline is sitting on my home lake. Your results are more than encouraging! Nice job!

A ponyhead style jig with curly tails on them

John, let me add something here that will eventually come into play when pulling longline off the front or sides---I ALWAYS leave my engine in gear so the prop won't be turning. After having clients (and myself) let lines get under the boat on turns or in windy conditions and having to unwind hundreds of yards of mono and braid from my prop shaft, I've found leaving the control in gear will prevent a bunch of issues. I leave my engine trimmed down for side stability in wind or waves.

I have had line get wrapped in my prop too many times. It is a pain to remove out on the lake.

I have tried this on Kentucky Lake once and it was the only way I could catch anything. It is a good tool for the box.

What Mrdux said. I was fixing to tell you the same thing but he beat me to it. John I long line 80% of the time and have found I have less tangles if I cut down the on the number of rods I pull, especially in the wind. On Weiss, my home lake there is a three pole limit per angler so the law makes it easy for me. I run two 12 ft poles off the front and four 7 foot rods out the back. I use this same set up when I have three of us in the boat. Trust me you will catch just as many fish and enjoy your day a lot more. I've found this out the hard way when I've fished Guntersville and other lakes with no pole limit. Glad your picking this up. I always wondered if long lining would work on big 4.
