Prayers for all and the first responders handing this tragic event.
Prayers sent, just crazy!
They say 9 of the 17 are from one family. I can't imagine.
I heard about the 9 family members on the way home today, such a devastating loss, got me choked up. My heart, thoughts and prayers go out to all effected by this tragedy. And I don't understand because the weather warnings were out, just horrible.

Can someone post the state's PFD regulations, please?
Ok, send a link to me in a PM.
Terrible tragedy. What kind of boats are those? When I heard Duck boat, I thought duck hunting boat but that's obviously not what it was.
They are military landing crafts.
I found this, not as strict as MS regulations.
All vessels 16 feet in length or longer must carry onewearable USCG–approved PFD (life jacket) for each personon board or being towed. Vessels less than 16 feet in lengthmust carry one wearable or one throwable USCG–approvedPFD for each person on board or being towed. Underfederal law, however, a wearable PFD is required for eachperson on board regardless of vessel length.■ Children under 7 years of age must wear a USCG–approvedPFD at all times while on board any vessel, unless the childis confined in a totally enclosed area of the vessel, such as thecabin area of a houseboat or day cruiser.
According to an interview I saw with one of the survivors today, they were shown the life jackets above them and where told they would not need them as they are only there for emergencies. She stated there were some comments by some of the passengers about how rough the lake was getting when they entered the water. She said they were never directed to put on the life vests. Sadly she and her 13yr old nephew were the only survivors of their family of 11. She lost her husband and 2 children as well as the others. The pilot of the boat also perished. From the weather warnings posted, for this area, ahead of time this does appear to be a case of operator error. For just situations like this I am glad that so many members, like myself, promote consistently the importance of wearing a PFD. I can't help but think that if an experienced angler/boater had been one of the passengers, they would have recognized the pending weather danger and not only put on a life vest but prompted others to do the same. As I have stated here before, I read an article some time back that stated "in over 80% of boating related drownings the victims were NOT wearing a PFD". The 4 out of 5 ratio is something we can hopefully make a difference in just by being an example.
Maybe this will be a wake up call and the state will changes it's PFD regulations some.
Problem solving comes down to identifying the ROOT CAUSE of the problem.
The ROOT CAUSE here is taking the boat out when it was KNOWN bad weather was approaching fast. 75 MPH winds.
Same line of storms that passed through Peculiar that morning headed south, we had heavy rain and big wind.
The rest of the BS is a moot point.
The boat should not have been on the lake.
You are exactly right Mike, the boat should NOT have been on the water! I have radar on my phone, got my butt out of a couple of storms. Operation like this should have monitored this situation. And they said all vests were stored in the front of the boat, they should be within arms length of every passenger on board!
Mike is right. Everything points towards not being on the water in the first place as there was plenty of warning time.
I was in the McDonald's drive through in Reeds Spring at 6:45. 5 Miles north of the swamping. I was on the East side of the building with the wind coming from the north by northwest.
My Pilot was buffeted around and I thought, am I in a Tornado? It was blue sky and calm 2 minutes before the winds started and that front was a fast mover.
Hopefully the companies will do something different.
Heed weather warnings.
Canopies with thin sections that can be pushed through or back sections not covered without seats.
All wear Auto inflate life vests and collect at the end of the trip.
Rapid fill airbags that could keep the machine afloat if tripped in an emergency to buy more time.
Spent many years on TR, not a much worse area of the lake to be on with strong N/NW winds. There are many excursion and public transport boats across the country that are vulnerable to the perfect storm. It happened this time.
