I started with 12 footers a couple years ago. Have 6 14 footers as well now. There's no way I could have started with 16's. 4 is usually the most I ever run by myself anyway. It's too easy to miss a bite if you're looking at your other poles. It's hard. I tell people at work that I work way harder fishing than I actually do at work. They laugh but I'm serious. It takes a lot of concentration and coordination. Like was mentioned previously, run your drag light enough that you can strip line from the reel. That is, if you're fishing shallower than the length of your poles. You may try using 2 poles then 3 then 4. It takes some time to get it down pat. Just keep at it. A springtime trip to green river will break you in the right way!
