I take it you have spinning reels on those 16' Southerns ?? You might consider changing them out for some baitcast reels w/thumb bars ... then you can simply push the thumb bar and let your thumb control the line spool and let the fish down to the level where you can swing it to you or to a net.
actually i just have those cheap reals that look like fly reels there is no way to cast them at all just for jigging
