There's several colors that I like and they all are what the crappie hit best that day..... chart, orange, yellow, gold, silver, black, pink, red & blue..... keep'um all with ya and use what put fish in the boat...
Best I can describe it.....
Natural works well at times....
What lake/s are you fishing Gnab2? If you list your lakes I may have some intel on some of the best colors for that lake at this time of year. One thing I have noticed about Texas lakes is the crappie are all interested pretty mush on the same color depending on what part of the lake or time of day it is. One lakes colors may not work in the next and so on. Some lakes need darker colors where the water is more stained and some require other factors. It can get downright mind boggling sometimes and some people over think it. Experience or asking questions is the best information you can get. Talk to people launching their boats at the ramp. Talk to others on the lake by going the slowest you can somewhere near them without disturbing them and yell out your questions. MANY anglers are ready to assist you while on the water. Just remember to thank them. That is the best thing you can do to keep getting info. I love to help others when they ask. Not all anglers are mean and hateful but some can be so just take it slooowww and act like a newbie and you'll get the good treatment I'm sure. LOL
As for anglers assisting off the water well you are in the best place to get the best advise! Just ask. Tight lines!
I fell for the the dark/stained water = dark bait for way too many years....
At times white/chart is the absolute best color for dirty water....
The best advise one can truly believe is experiment with color combos while putting them in productive waters...
Theirs NO set color for any particular scenario when chasing crappie.....
Have several colors and work them all until you find success....
You'll launch with the skunk already in the boat if you set your mind to what's going to work before wetting your jigs....
FISH ON.....and BAAAM when you set tha hook.....:HandsClapping
I'll pm you with what I have heard was working on any of the lakes you mentioned.
Darks work well for some and some can't stand them as you can see.
Again, your best bet is to talk to friendly anglers that are willing to share their experience with you based on their set skills and knowledge.
And NEVER forget, minnows are on every pro boat in a tournament so don't let anyone tell you that you can't use them to locate the crappie and then work your jigs. Too many "jig only" anglers like to bash other anglers that use them. Don't listen to them. Catch more than them and they shut up.
Tight lines buddy.
LOL...
Sure use whatever works but be sure to keep an open mind on colors and all the other variables that go along with catchn these fish.
I fish for crappie year round and do very well.
Some may only fish for them during "the season" as so many become experts during that time when it is easy.
Some times color means nothing just get the jig down there in their face and catch them left and right...
An open mind will put the right color on your line and down some slab crappie throats....
You won't ever see me use a minna since they are not required to catch SLAB CRAPPIE but I don't condone anyone using them, I do encourage all that are willing to accept the challenge to use jigs... they go where you can't put a minna...:notworthy:kewl
I am not stuck on jigs or minnows. The best crappie fisherman I know used both. I would say he used mainly minnows. That was my Grandpa and I learned a ton from him but he has passed and I have moved to Texas. As I see it is any day fishing is a good day. I just love to eat them. As I put the time in I will learn them. I just wanted to see if the colors hold true down here. I know that some say pink is a go to but I have never used it but I still have the normal go to ones..

A couple months ago a all pink hand tie jig was a for sure EXCELLENT jig that I was using on my home lake, these crappie fish are the finickiest fish you can chase.
Sometimes color is the difference between catchn or not, sometimes it don't matter what color you drop but when it does matter be prepared....
More times than not location & action means more than color....
Main thing is have fun and ENJOY THE HUNT....
I posted some vids that may help you if you look through some of the past post here.
Actually my last vid was on the subject of jig color.....
Your talking soft plastics, but I use hand ties and can tell you my favorites, but also know there are things like water clarity and sun shinning to not that will make a huge difference.
So here are my favs with water condition noted:
Water is stained, but not bad, but can't see my jig 3' down yet....Chart/Blue/Chart and #2 is XHArt/Black/Chart
Water is clear which for me means I can see my jig 3' down or more.....Silver/Silver/FL Blue and there are several that will fall at #2
Now it rains like crazy and the water is super stained, maybe see down 1 ' or 1 1/2' then I want Flame Red/Black & Chart/Hot Orange
The above are all 1/32 oz Roadrunner/Pony head type marabou tail baits and used in the Spring and Fall.
You mentioned Pink, Have had good luck in a all Hot Pink Jig! (Of course the all Hot Pink jigs need FL Red Body, lol)!
See Picture Below for my favs! I have some here I didn't mention, but are also good!
Had to come back and mention that bottom one can be a killer in most any water at times! Blue/White is a killer!

Excellent jig post Skip! Puts the colors in perspective well!
Nice jigs too!
Man I miss the jig swaps we used to do in here! Always enjoyed getting yours!
Very good. Thanks for the help and updates. I have a bit of a game plan now.

I typically pocket 4 main colors or 5 with me and carry no tackle box 90% of the time . I also typically ketch crappie at an alarming rate .......:Rofl
don't fall for the bla bla bla posted up about it has to be this or that on whatever lake and they "only" want whatever .....
carry something natural that's got sparkle and looks real
carry something dark that's got some black blue or brown in it
carry something ridiculous bright chart predominantly
and I like a bright orange sometimes as well ....
sometimes even just plain old vanilla white ...
light and or lack of plays a roll in this for sure in some cases as does water clarity
I have an assortment of jigs plus I am picking up minnows today for the outing Friday and Saturday. I think the weather will have plenty of a factor also. Thanks

minnows ??????????? stop it that's just wrong on several levels .....LOL
HaHaHaHaaaaaa..... this is funny.....
Just have FUN & ENJOY however you catch, just keep those lines wet....
Don't have to get all serious about one encouraging others of the most satisfying way to accept a challenge of putting the best fish to chase on the end of their line.... WOW
Sound like you're willing to have a fish off? Lake Conroe, summer time, you and the minna & me and my personally hand tied jigs?
Not picking a fight just having fun like always:biggrin:cheers2
so let me better understand this ....you know what colors work on every lake and then you use minnows ....maybe I missed something
brains will out do that other body part all day long btw .......rotfl
Moderators? My post was to ask about colors with minnows as a go too. I do not and will not condone people bashing or turning a topic that is not their own into their personal issues with others. For the respect to myself and others do not hijack another person's topic. Please keep this professional and respectful. Response that is on here as of late is nothing of the sort.
This turns others off to posting or asking questions.
In my opinion, one that your confident in! Else you are just gonna be changing every 5 min and eventually end up right back where u started. With ole faithful! For me it's a red head, black/silver body, black/grey hackle tail with mucho flash.
chart, white, orange, yellow, gold, silver, black, pink, red & blue and combining colors. I have all of these colors in my box and always have a bucket full of minnows.
I let the fish tell me what they want. to me it depends on the lake water color/clarity and the depth I am fishing. the time of years plays a big part on what area I am going to fish. on a lake that I am not familiar with I use google earth and alter the time frame to signify the drought time frame so I can see the banks and growth. it will also give u the GPS coordinates so u can write them down and insert the on your graph.
Yes it is funny that Google Earth is becoming a go to tool on new lakes. What is rough is we have several constant level lakes in the area that makes it hard to use the tool for scouting.
Lakes without much info make it harder for sure. I have not used it, but think that I have seen one of the map makers have something that you can add your own tracks to start making our own map? I am not sure I am saying that right, but do think I can do that on my Humminbird, but have not tried.

My Garmin has Quick draw Contours live map creation with 1' contours. I have been playing with it but not a pro yet. I use google earth to help me with a basic plan and go from there.
