There are the common hairs being used for tying but who out there has used oddball hairs and what we're they? A friend gave me a shoulder section from a wild boar which has of course has some pretty long coarse hairs. On the way home there was a fresh coyote in the middle of the road and it got me to thinking...how good would the yote hairs and boar hairs work. What else is out there to use?

I have been thinking of a yoke tail also. Just have to find a fresh one.
I was gonna grab the one today cause it looked pretty fresh but it was on a blind curve so had to let it go

I have some coyote and is good stuff actually. I have Polar Bear, Fox, Australian Possum and American Possum, Rabbit (also Bunnybou strips), Regular Squirrel, Pine Squirrel Zonkers, Mink strips, Elk, Deer, Moose, Badger, Finnish Racoon and probably a couple others I am not thinking about. Oh yeah Temple Dog I got before it became a bad thing to buy due to the way they were being treated I think maybe in China?? Once they started using this hair people started trying to take advantage and became not the thing to buy!
Also know you better treat that hide if you happen on a fresh kill like that. Make sure to do the things you need to on that hide.

My question,which you probably heard before, "what difference does it make"? I sure dunno.
Well there are some fly patterns that call for a specific type of hair, like the Elk Hair Caddis for example, but I think it has more to do with the type of hair for what you want. Some is more stiff and gives less action, but some is soft like rabbit and is more like marabou in the water. Also consider some hair is hollow and some not so there is a buoyancy difference and an action difference and each can be a big positive or negative depending on the circumstance. So even though it's all hair there is a difference in them that will make a difference.Quote:

I would imagine hog hair being so stiff may be good in cold water as they don't want to chase anything then and looking for an easy meal. Same can be said for Kip Tail as it's mostly short hair and even though it's not as stiff as some it works well in a lot of water conditions, but I still lean more to cool water for that. That is just me though as many use hair all the time, like deer hair aka buck tails and also Kip Tail (Calf tails). LOL I didn't mention them above, but I have a lot of them as well.

And just so it is said, Bucktail may come from a deer, whose body hair is hollow but the bucktail is not. Two different animals to tie with. I have always wanted to try spinning deer hair to make topwater bass flies but have yet to try it. Hair works at times and is always worth carrying a few.
While on the subject of hair...please enlighten a novice on what to do with zonkers.

My best friend uses a special hair that he collects himself. I'm sworn to secrecy as to what it is, but it makes a killer dry fly that works everywhere on everything. It's the only fly he uses. The tricky part is that the animal carries the Hanta virus, and he has to be very careful.

Oh and on that hide thing, even just doing a squirrel tail I will use Borax and Salt to cure the end where it's cut off. The Borax is good to kill germs. I do not know what else is available for a whole hide like a Coyote or Fox or any full pelt.

Have many of the same as Skip = Rabbit, squirrel, pine squirrel and red squirrel zonkers, mink, Arctic fox, red fox, polar bear, deer, coyote, Possum, mule deer, moose, elk, badger,
alpaca, sable, nutria, mountain goat, black/brown/grizzly bear, chinchilla, bison, muskrat, calf tail, beaver, and more. but I also tie flies and skip is right certain flies are tied with certain materials.
Fatman, have you ever tied a brown bear brown or a brown bear black. I have caught more trout on those two flies than on any other fly. The original tyer was Mr. Wombacher. When he died, the copiers used a different shade of brown that did not work nearly as well. They look simple to tie, black or brown thread body with an orange weave on the belly, and brown bear hair tied to lie along the body. I have one left, but I keep it with my trout stuff in Montana.

No problems. Since I am now a geezer (and not always sure about things), I went through the trout stuff that I DO have here, looking for that fly or one my buddy's super flies. Found quite a few dries and some wets, but no bbbrown or bbblack. Must be in Montana.
Never tied a brown bear brown or a brown bear black. But I tried looking for a picture of them also, but have learned from some sites that they are a streamer pattern. Still looking though - brown bear hair can be different shades, depends on what part of the hide they clipped it from. If I find any good pics I'll post them.
Fatman, the bbbrown and bbblack are nymphs. Look up the sandy mite. The bbb's are similar, except that the bear hair is very fine and there is not a lot of it on the nymph. The body is thread only and it tapers toward the end. The orange on the belly is a single thread that is woven in. Again, unless halfzeimers sets in, I'll try to find the fly and post a picture of it.

Seems they are an off shoot of the Potts Fly Group - and were originally tied with Asiatic badger which was apparently better than American Badger

I've not seen this version before. The Wombachers started tying them in the 20's or 30's (I think). Their version was all thread, with the tapered body, a totally different look. We are going to try to get out of Dodge and be in Montana next week. Hopefully, I can post a picture next week.

Skip, the silver brown is nowhere close. The upper body of the bbb's is thick and either uniformly black, or uniformly brown.

Sorry to be so slow in getting these pics, but I wasn't near a PC in Montana, and being techno-illiterate, I didn't know how to load from my phone. We just got back from Montana (where we slayed a lot of brookies, browns, and cutbows). I couldn't find my Wombacher version of the bbb. The fly that is pictured is the newer version of the brown bear brown. The differences from the Wombacher fly are that: 1. The hair in the picture is horse, not bear, and it is too long. 2. The brown colored thread is a little too dark. 3. The body shape should be more like the body that I drew in the other picture.
I DID get a few browns on the fly that is pictured, but nothing like what I always did with the Wombacher version.
Good to be back in OK. Getting ready to get after the crappie and cats.

In the Dillon area (SW corner of MT). The rivers are the Big Hole and Beaverhead. The lakes are (from top to bottom) Tub, Reservoir,Tub, and Clark Canyon. We also fish a lot of other lakes in the area. We used to fish Hauser, Canyon Ferry, Helena Regulating Reservoir, and Holter fairly often when we lived in Helena. The best spot on Hauser was an underwater ridge where the arm from the Causeway enters the lake. I knew a couple of scuba divers who placed old mattress springs on the ridge and collected quite a few lures and pop gear that trollers lost to the springs.
Really nice pictures, thanks for sharing them! I kind of see the flies and talking us through that at lest gives me an idea of our topic!

I have used all of the hair that has been posted, but I have one that no on said the have used, skunk hair! Ties like cat hair.
Dog hair works but can be messy since it isn't held together by skin. I've made jigs from my little Yorkshire terrier and my son's white shepherd and they do catch fish. Coyote is the closest you can get to dogs and have the skin on it. I'm sure that any hair tied on a jig will catch fish, some are just a lot better. Never tried skunk but I'm sure you can find some on the internet.

When I was 7 (50 years ago) my father taught me to comb the cat, then rub beeswax on the thread and twist the cat fur around the thread & wrap the body with it. The finished product isn't very pretty, but fish will eat it.
