My downstairs unit went out too. A/C technician looked at it for five minutes and said he would quote me a price to replace it. I think I need a second opinion.

I love the new units they sell now,,, they use reverse heat pump technology for cooling and heat pump for heating,,,
Why do boys need heat??? It don't get cold down there!! Lol

If one needs a lot of repair its best to get a new unit since they are not makeing r12 and r 22 freon anymore. I replaced my heat and air unit year before last on account of that.

Been talking that forever ain't making any Freon for older units. I have a small leak. I have it charged up every 2 years. Cost about 100 bucks. They say it's time to replace with new unit. I ain't changing nothing until the compressor is shot. They quoted me 5000. I have a 3500 sq ft home. 2 units. The upstairs is the one leaking. That quote sounds way to high. Walker in Oxford is who I use.
You can still get r22 but its high. I still have a 30 lb drum from my ac days.
Find a place that sells parts, get you a can of leak seal. Comes in a kit with charging hose. Follow instructions in kit and most likely solve your problem. Was having to add 2 lb's a year to upstairs unit. Put a can in 3 years ago and no problem. Just put one in down stairs unit. Will see how this one does.
Cane you can always make some type of homemade cooling device, Probably have that thing blowing snowballs.
I put a block of ice in a shop vac and it did good for a while. Can't make ice fast enough. Second block of ice had a lot of moisture in the house, the walls were running.

Window A/C unit
Their not on sale, have to go to the auction.
Mine was about two years away from average life span.....put freon in it two years in a row at $250 each time. My A frame coil was shot.....over 30 leaks in it. Rather than the expensive A frame replacement and freon ski high and hard to find....i went with a new central unit that uses the new stuff. Its very energy efficient and cut the power bill about 40 percent. 2000 square ft. House....new heating and cooling unit....a Carrier....installed $6000. It works great.

If a central unit is too high priced for you.........https://www.lowes.com/search?searchTerm=window+air+conditioners. They even have them with heat.
So, if I understand correctly. Eventually we all will have to replace the older units using refrigerant? Maybe sooner rather than later. I have been nursing this one along replacing fan motors and capacitors and it is about 12-15 years old. Maybe I should just replace.

The new ones use a new refrigerant and run at a lot higher pressure. They sell the units by a .... spelling may not be right....sere rating....the higher the sere number the better the perfomance and efficientcy....i bought the one with the highest rating.

If I remember right they came in 11sere....13....and 15 ....of course the higher the rating ...the higher the cost

Yeah, I was just quoted a price for a 14 seer unit for my downstairs. 2.5 ton for $3100 installed

The company with the $7,250 price called today. The system comes with 5 yrs labor and 10 yrs parts warranty. He will add another 5 yrs labor and drop the price to $6,640.
Yes, I went to the auction friday night. There is an ac guy to goes too. I gave him the info and he was to call today after checking prices. He said his last 30# jug of 22 was $584. and was told that it would go higher during the summer. The last 50# jug of 22 I bought was $85 in '91.
I have some old 14 oz cans of 12, I paid 2 or $3 for them. He said, if you can find them now they are 70 to $80.
I help my FIL during slow times with his hvac business.
R22 is getting hard to get and is high.
These new HE units are nice. Expensive but seem to do a fine job keeping up with the heat while not making your electricity bill sky high.
Get someone who knows what they are doing! When you're dropping that kind of coin it helps to know the person/company will stand behind their product. Have already worked on several that couldn't get anyone to do Warrenty work on.
Stay cool!

This is for my house in Horn Lake. My daughter is gone to much to hang units out of the windows.
My stepdad wouldn't replace the central unit here so I have 3 12,000 btu window units.
Not as long as you don't have a leak. Pull that top cover with electricity disconnected, take a hose and wash out the cooling coils a couple of times a year. Keeps head pressure down and makes life easier on compressor. As much as anything when it gets to a Serbian point you will need to replace heater side because of rust out or burn out making them dangerous to run. The Government came out with new mandates a couple of years ago upping the sear ratings on A/C units and on some refrigeration units. Thus the need for a new more efficient environmentally friendly refrigerant. Like G said these new refrigerants work under a lot higher pressure than say 22. So then they tax the stew out of those products to force them off the market and force you to buy newer more efficient units. Like G said also, they are really efficient and will really cut your operating cost and go a long way toward paying for them selfs in not to long a time unlike years past where ROI took forever.
The new refrigerant is 410A run about double head press. than r22 good stuff. The seer rating are a lot better, also that's why they cost more.
"need to replace heater side because of rust out or burn out making them dangerous to run."
Being a '71 model that's what I'm afraid of. Replace the ac this year and replace the heater next year.
Those prices sound really high. I had a 5 ton Carrier complete unit with compressor and air handler with gas heat for $3500,2 years ago. He was a friend but he made money on the deal
Units range from 14 seer to 20 plus seer. Buy a 15 seer with variable speed fan motor in your furnace if you can afford it. The variable speed motor can take out 2-3 times more moisture out of your house making it more comfy in our humid climate.
Cash reduces the deal by 4%.
