I've never talked to a farmer that wasn't struggling. [emoji12]
They all live high on the hog tho. Lol
Man I'm with you! We have a farm and EVERYTIME I got interested in taking it over after high school my grand father would throw a huge fit yelling that a farmer can not make it in this world! Hahahaha he has farmed his whole life, paid for the ground and ALL of his equipment, has a nice house and belongings and pretty much anything he wants. So I was discouraged from farming and went into nursing. But I keep scratching my head wondering what he meant about not being able to make it hahaha. I feel for ya tho super glue on your bad year. Definitely adds to the stress level.
The farmers up here always have a bad year,so they say.but keep doing it. Kinda like a politician
Been farming in MS since 1806 in China grove. Almost made a profit once in the early 1900's great granddaddy said. Got really , really close to getting out of debt back then. Who knows, maybe this will be the century to make a dollar or two!!
Btw. My wife is a nurse. That's the reason we eat regularly.
I've never met a poor farmer.....[emoji14]
My uncle in Michigan has apple orchards. Remember him as a kid crying the blues all summer about a late freeze killing his blossums and not having a harvest. But went all year without spraying or paying pruners and pickers. Laughed all the way to the bank when the subsidy checks came. I aint saying farming is simple and my hats off to all farmers. But the bs sessions get old.
Back in the 80's the govt actually paid us to leave out 3% of the land. Nuts.. Those subsidy payments go to the corn acres in the Midwest now. No such thing as a southern payment unless you grow rice down here. Not much corn base acres in the south. All of ours is cotton base and they are no longer a program crop. As far as we are concerned they need to get rid of all of it and find a stable insurance program that can't be scammed by the unscrupulous. We have multi state farmers that move yields all over the U.S. to make it pay. Makes no sense to those who do it right. One can say "it's just business" but some of us think that's not going to help you on judgement day. Pay now or pay forever.
But man you wanna see some BS come to the Emergency Room. Hahahahaha will get more than a full cup in about an hour. Hahaha. Never seen so many people WANTING to be ill. Tell them all the test came back perfect and your a healthly individual and man get cussed out on the way out of the room. Makes no sense to me. If someone tells me that there is nothing wrong with me...... It would tickle me pink hahahaha.
Hahaha! My wife was a paramedic for 5 years before nursing school. She has some full moon stories that will make you crack a rib laughing.
Thanks for the call today Ken. I enjoyed talking to ya. I'll see you and Larry at the MCC tourney in Grenada in a few weeks.
Oh yeah, the checks in the mail. [emoji12]
I know there is a big difference in the country with soil types and weather but my neighbors farm maybe work a total of 3 months a year farming 1000 acres and spend 2 months vacationing in Florida every year. They have a big cabin cruiser where they spend most of the summer on the lake. I'm not jealous about it but they have it pretty good. What does make me upset is that they laugh and joke about how hard they got it. They need to walk in some of you guys shoes sometime.
Was checking cameras today with my granddaughter and came across this. 5 inches of legs. Body was a little over an inch. Anybody know what kind it is?Attachment 216716
bananna spider
Thanks. New to me or usually gone when I get to the woods. Legs were so different in length it looked strange. Biggest spider I've ever seen around hereAttachment 216717
Just like a politician or farmer when the questions get close to the heart, change the subject.
Politician=the American farmer? Wow. Ouch. I was under a tractor this afternoon trying to get a lift cylinder pin out laying in the ants thinking that this is not a smart way to make a living. I know there are some jerks out there that like to think they are something special because their family had a business but not here. Just trying to be a good father, friend, and neighbor.
Dont get upset, Im just messin with ya.
I know cuz. Been kinda grouchy lately. Nothing a day of fishing can't cure. Hasn't rained enough to measure here since July 5. Opposite of y'all up there. I'm sure you were thinking about building an ark this summer.

Peanuts..........
"Upland cotton is no longer considered a covered commodity, but the upland cotton base acres on the farm are renamed “generic” base acres. Producers may receive payments on generic base acres if those acres are planted to a covered commodity."
Peanuts. At least that is what is growing on the ex-cotton farm across the road from my farm.
And no, I don't farm anymore. I got out when I was in my late 20's. My great great Gran-dad farmed, great Gran-dad farmed, Gran-dad farmed, Dad farmed, and I farmed. Heck, my family has been farming somebodies land since they got off of the boat in the mid 1600's in Virginia. It was tough for all of em. I went back to school, and got enough education that I could find an easier way to make a living.
Yep. Generic sounded good to us till the fine print came out. Check out what NASS did to Washington county. Didn't even kiss us first. Then check sunflower county.
Everybody's life and job has ups and downs. 2/3 of the planet would kill to have our life and struggles. Lots of food, lots of problems. No food.....one problem. Grateful to live in the good ole USA.
Unlike farmers, I love my work. In fact, if I won the lottery, I would stay in the flooring business til it was all gone.
Oh, don't get me wrong. I love farming.
I grew up living on the family farm. I still like to get on a tractor and spend a day pulling a disk. I often got off work at school during the fall and rode out to the place and drove a combine till it got to damp to cut. I like tinkering in the shop and watching stuff grow. I hated the crap with the USDA. And banks. And legal offices.
Dad's truck was so full of papers and mail that he hardly ever got to "farm." He wasn't really a farmer anymore, more like a businessman who had a truck instead of an office. Of course, he said he would rather do office work out of a truck than office work in an office. He was making plans for the next crop the day before he passed away.............
Those banana spiders are everywhere in the woods late summer early fall. I've ran through a many of their webs on my 4 wheeler. Never been bitten.
Only if one bites you. I haven't heard of anyone being bit by one of the banana spiders.
Years ago I was bit on the hand by a spider, don't know what kind. Mom told me to cut a piece of fatback and tape it on the bite. A few days later I removed it to find what looked like a web under the skin. I drained it and applied another piece of fatback for a few days. I drained a lot less this time and went back to work without going to the doctor.
