The proposed rule change for crappie allows anglers to keep a fish up to 12 inches and sets the daily creel limit to 15 fish per angler.
I'm thinking this is a misprint that we can KEEP fish up to 12 inches ?????
What does Louisiana have to do with approving what happens in MS?
dunno, bordering states sometimes have have recipical agreements.......Maybe Rees can tell us as he has been talking to the officials involved
I'm reading it as letting you keep one short fish(12 and under). 15 limit, 3 poles per person.
If that's what it takes I'm all for it. Only negative is if they keep lowering the number I may become one of those dreaded limit fishermen. LOL.
As usual they have changed the rules and cannot word it where folks can understand them :banghead
G, I think the LA agreement is only for Eagle Lake, which is also on the LA side. Always like that with river lakes. Ferguson and Whittington have agreements with AR Game and Fish, I think. Article kinda misleading, says "up to 12 inches" when it should read over 12 inches.
Although it was not mentioned in the article, I think some changes have been proposed for Eagle Lake as well. That would be the only lake Louisiana would be involved in since it borders us..........sorry, guess I was posting at the same time Duckhunter was.
Here is a good article that explains it..............
Crappie Regulation Changes Proposed for Flood Control Reservoirs and Eagle Lake | Vicksburg Radio
Or this one... Brian Bloom with the Clarion Ledger.

Trust me, It is about the crappie changes.......
LA lower their daily limit and there was some kind of agreement that the creels would be the same down there, just staying in line.
The Minimum Length Limit is very confusing, 12 MLL to me means the Min Length Limit is 12, not has to be over 12".
Here's a copy of the some of the things in the Intent that effect the crappie fisherman:
Minimum Length Limit (MLL)
a. All fish on or less than the regulated size length in inches must be returned to the water immediately after capture and may not be in possession on the designated waters.
b. All fish over the minimum length limit in total length may be kept not to exceed the legal daily creel limit.
Each person with a valid sport fishing license or those exempt under 49-7-5 may fish no more than three (3) poles or rods with two (2) hooks or lures per pole while fishing on Sardis, Grenada, Arkabutla, and Enid Lakes.
The aggregate daily boat creel limit for all species of crappies (white crappie, black crappie and their hybrids) for boats with 3 or more licensed or exempt anglers shall be 40 legal crappie per boat on Arkabutla, Sardis, Enid and Grenada Lakes.
Effective October 1, 2015, the minimum length limit for crappie (white crappie, black crappie and their hybrids) in Eagle Lake (Warren County) shall be 11 inches with a daily creel limit of 30 per person per day (in agreement with same regulation from the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries).
I LIKE IT ! RESIVOIRS WILL OVER POPULATE DUE TO LOWER PRESSURE AND THEN WE CAN BE BACK TO 10 INCH FISH .JMO :popcorn
be foolish to keep one right at 12 inches. i've had wardens tell me it better be over that line. i wouldn't risk it. not worth the fine and i'm not that desperate for a fish. fact i caught it was fun enough.
If and when the new rule changes go into effect, how will the let the public know?
Have we changed who is taking care of it ? In ten year increments would you say fishing is better now than in 2005 ? 2005 better than 1995 ? Restricting honest ,law abiding fishermen , to compensate for the lack of enforcement to me is a Band-Aid . M.DW.F.P do a great job with resources given . I would like to see folks in Jackson treat "outdoor recreation " as a State resource , not a burden .JMO.
You hit the nail on the head. They have to enforce whatever they decide. There are some GWs that give their buddies heads up when and where they'll be. IMO during high pressure times there should be at least 4 GWs on the big 4. 2 stationary at the busiest ramp and the other 2 split up and going from ramp to ramp. Stay at each ramp an hour then go to the next.
As far as fishing better or not, bigger yes, better no.
Another thing MDWF needs to raise license fees for residents and nonresident to pay for more GWs. In TN now my license for the year for a sportsman goes to $160 a year. That's what a resident pays. I get my nonresident fish in MS for $55 then in the fall I get my small game and duck for $100. It's cheaper for me to fish and hunt in MS than in TN. Dad gets his resident Sportsman for somewhere around $25-30 , that's not enough guys. MDWF needs to get in line with TWRA license fees. Got to be able to pay for the needed enforcement. TN resident fish and small game is going to $35 That's more than MS sportsman license.
If they doubled the fees they'd just waste the money on something else. They seem to have plenty of help on Holidays, and during the spawn when most of the out of staters are making them money in minor violations. They seem to only be concerned about the fishing when it's the most profitable for them.
Maybe we would get lucky and get docks at all the Big 4 major ramps with some of the extra money. Higher fees might detour some of the Tourism Dollars the fishing and hunting generates tho. It's a "danged if ya do, and danged if ya don't" kinda deal.
Like Bird Down said, "Just need to keep fishing, and have fun".
Exactly!!!! Can't see anything being done with the money I spend now. Make the ramps safer at the very least.
the extra money from license fees would go to the state......The lakes ( big 4 ) and surrounding land belongs to COE.....the state does not even own the state parks on them.....they are leased from COE. Yep....its Federal property. Just enjoy what we got and go fishing.
Democrats over the last 50 years didn't seem to do any better did they?
We've been keeping fish over 12" all along. They must mean we can keep a short fish.
Lets stay on track or i will lock this one down
I disagree with you on raising the license fee on people from out of state. I live in Tennessee and fish in Mississippi 5-10 days a month. I
pay to store my camper, pay the campground fees, buy my groceries, camper supplies, bait, fuel for my truck and boat, have my boat worked on, and eat in restaurants in Mississippi. I read and article in the Mississippi Sportsman Magazine that said the last license increase for Mississippi Resident license was 23 years ago. Out of Staters pay 10 times what Mississippi residents pay. I choose to live in Tennessee and don't mind paying my fair share to utilize Mississippi resourses.
fellas....this topic is about the new crappie rules.......its not about license fees and what you spend on other things
This thread went so far South, it wound up in Jackson. [emoji12]
Speaking for myself, if they would use the money for enforcement of the regs , I'd gladly pay double what I pay now. All the rule changes in the world is worthless without enforcement.
I started fishing crappie on Sardis in 1996. Number wise it was wayyyy better back then with the exception of 2013 and 2014. Quality wise it started making a upward trend in 2011. I caught my first 3 lber on Sardis in 2013 and then another shortly after. Jmo but the lake had just started paying dividends for the increase in size to 12 inch minimum.
That's right. 12" rule helped sardis big time. Glad to see them thinking bout going back to it.
OK.....I jus want to know, in plain, simple English, how many feesh I can keep (as if that's ever an issue for me, lol), and OVER what length they must be. If one lake is partly in MI and the other half in LA., it's simple. Have Wannabe go down there, draw a line in the water and mark it MI or LA. MI rules apply on that side, and LA rules apply on their side. Problem solved!!
Now, let's go fishin.......
It will only happen if both states apply the same rules.
