Yeah, just sucks! Between that and the sewage spill in burlington, makes you wonder how much fish you will be able to catch or eat.
:< !
Not good for your business or personal recreation Keith... Hate to hear that.
Sounds like it's going to effect Gaston as well. Thats stinks. Hope its not true
Ye,and roakoke rapids also, the three nearest lakes to me and the ones i fish, have not fish any other lakes in years except when i went to fla, didn't get to fish much last year for cancer and was hoping for a good year this year,oh well maybe it won't be as bad as belive to be,
there is some info on the Kerr proboard by a guy that helped with the Belews Creek Res problem yrs ago. he says that it will not be as bad as that one was because of the time it takes to flush all the water thru the system. happens pretty fasy at Buggs, and that will help us. may affect the whole system but hopefully not as bad as it could be.
This just makes me sick! Can't believe how little press it's getting. Guess we need a big ole flood to help wash it through. No telling what the Government's plan will be. They may pretend it didn't happen or go the other way and shut lakes down to recreation. They say the treated water is fine. ;) right. What about swimming this year. Again the possibilities of what might be just makes me sick!!
I guess it will eventually make its way down the Roanoke river and then the Albemarle Sound and smoke them too. There goes My fishing. The Albemarle Sound is the septic tank of Buggs.CF
Hey CF you can come up to Currituck and fish with us. We have some nice creeks with lots of fish. Just look IT. Upper Chowan should be fine also.
Yea it is very hush hush since congress is getting ready to vote on deregulating coal ash completely making the energy companies 100% not at fault for anything that results from the dumping of the ash. By the way that big mountain sitting right at the hot ditch, coal ash sitting right on the Elizabeth river. The ash is already deregulated they now just want absolutely no responsibility for what it does in the future. As always big money rules.
our guvenner worked for Duke Power for 30 yrs! ya know he's gonna make'em walk the line!!!LOL!
Hope it dosent effect fish too bad at buggs this spring. I make yearly trip to lake every year to crappie fish. Will be my 4th trip to buggs. Not only is it tuff to fish a lake thats unfamiliar but now this crap gotta happen. What do you think doc?
Sounds like that burning desire I have had to make a trip to Kerr can be snuffed out now. Only problem is I'll see it here at home eventually. All that water comes to Most of the waters I fish.CF
I wouldn't cancel any trips or plans yet. keep a check on this board an see how it affects the fishin, I'm gettin some encouragin reports already. The COE seems to be holdin the lake so a lot of the ash should settle in the upper lake where the water first starts backin up. there is already a lot of silt settled in this area and the folks in the know say this stuff bonds with mud an sinks to the bottom. As much water exchange that occurs in this watershed may lessen the effect to where there is no noticable change in the overall fishin. being a fisherman at heart, I'm always optimistic!
There was an article in our local paper that says it will not be very bad.
just seen an article claims Duke will be dredgin the Dan. they shoulda dredged the ash pit b4 this happened!
Why this late, they should have call the dredging crew in last sunday
just saw that there was another spill in West Virginia
Fly ash is exempt from regulation, there is no legal obligation for them to do anything. They will put a dredge in, take the photo ops and play a bit an be done with it. Ash is heavy and will settle out, only every time it rains on the muddy banks, it gets stirred up again. Stuff is so corrosive it will eat holes aluminum boats! So watch out if you pull your boat up on the bank to store.
With any luck maybe we can turn back to those wonderful days, before EPA, and set the rivers on fire which happened.Cuyahoga river around Cleveland circa 1969.
Finally, a little bit of attention for the 3rd largest ash spill in US History.
"The pressure on Duke Energy over its coal ash practices has intensified as federal authorities revealed a criminal investigation of a “suspected felony” surrounding a Feb. 2 ash spill on North Carolina’s Dan River.
Duke and the N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources confirmed Thursday that they were subpoenaed to produce records before a federal grand jury that will meet in Raleigh next month."
Sure hate to think that anyone would be bad enough to do it on perpose,oh well we may see
Allow me to provide the proper Faux News spin. The horrible US Dept. of Justice is caring out a vendetta against the innocents at Duke Power, which the impartial NC environmental agency has properly investigated. This is class warfare everyone knows that rich corporations should be allowed to do as they please and those poor folks downstream are probably socialists and should be thankful that Duke Power is adding to the chemical diversity of the river. Why do they hate America. You've been Hannitized.
Maybe, maybe not. But here's some reading ya'll can do, to find out what to expect : https://www.google.com/search?q=watt...sm=93&ie=UTF-8
And you can ask DonG what he thinks about whether or not the ash spill at Watts Bar had any effect on the fishing, following the spill.

I think they should put someone in jail. any fine will be paid by we, the customers. If one CEO had to spend a few yrs in jail, the rest would prolly fall in line,JMHO
I'm sure our Governor, having such a close relationship with DE, will do everything in his power to assure the problem is dealt with in the most efficient way possible.
Lmao!!!
Does anyone know if it has made it to the lake yet?
At this point it's gonna be hard to tell just by looking .. there's enough water come down the river that the ash won't be obvious. If we leave it up to NC to test and disclose we may never know. Hopefully the Corps will keep tabs and publicize their results.
As of today this was reported.
Two miles downstream, they found ash 5 inches deep, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. At the N.C.-Virginia line, 9 miles down the river, it was 2 inches thick. Traces of ash were found all the way to Kerr Lake more than 70 miles away.
Bb,that don't sound good
It's made it to Buggs Island, NOW they are going to study the effect on the fish.. according to news 7 ..
Only bad news on this front, seems Duke Power has a gift that keeps on giving.
Likely get what amounts to DE as a slap on the wrist. What we gonna do, boycott?
Don't have any "local connections" left, Don. And can't get any response from the Tenn Forum, either.
I've restarted the Spring Fling/Fall Brawl series ... on Green River Lake, here in KY. (about a 6.5hr drive for you  ... and a 2.5hr drive for me)
And we're also running some Fruit Jar $$ tourneys, starting in March @ KY Lake, then some other local lakes in the months following.
But, yeah ... I do still miss fishing on "The Bar" ... and would pack up & head down there in a heartbeat, if I could get some reputable reports.

I have searched out all the articles that I could find and dug up a lot of history concerning the power plant, Much of the plant was constructed from 1948 through 1951; with state of engineering what it was then, what they had was a disaster that had to happen; especially considering the lack of proper maintenance over the years. Placing the ash pit within a couple of hundred feet of the river was a real bright idea too.
Reading over the articles of the last few weeks has me convinced that the politicians and big business are trying to minimize the financial damage, and cover their butts more than putting everything available into keeping more contamination from occurring, and containing what has hit the river and cleaning it up.
There's no telling what the end result will be, but you can be sure your electric bills, down the road, will show you who is going to pay for it. That's just not right! B-
