Welcome to the club....
Yep, I had my yearly physical in Dec. The doc told me the same. I'm up to 190 from 165. Other restrictions; nothing made with real fruit, no sugar and nothing green.
Mine told me the same thing. Solved problem. Got new Dr., who is also fat. He never mentions it.
Problem is.... Even though I don't drive a route truck anymore I'm required to keep my CDL and my medical examiners card, now this DR says I've got to lose some weight are go for a sleep study test.
you can SLEEP throught that 1
Fruit and green veggies produce calcium which produces calcium kidney stones.
What about red, white, and blue? PBR?
Big Smooth just eat you a good breakfast, a nice big salad for lunch, and bake or broil most of your meats or chicken and stay away from bread, rice, spaghetti.Eat as many veggies as you want and for sure stay away from sweet tea, cokes, and too many adult beverages.Top it off with a small bowl of ice cream as your dairy for the day!I did this and lost 25lbs. in just a little over a month.
Guys here is another reason to get your weight down and exercise. And I need to loose 25 lbs. myself so I am not being self rightous.
Without going into a lot of detail, a relative in the family scoffed at any notion of dieting or execise. This person was a loving and caring person to my wife and would have never chosen the outcome that happened. She became a widow with no children and when her bad habits caused her health to fail, guess who had to pick up the pieces. My wife spent 6 years of her life taking care of this person who would not take care of herself. She finally ended up in a nursing home which took quite a buden off my wife but she still has to deal with medicare and the nursing home and all her financial affairs.
All it takes is a stoke or similar malady that you never saw coming to put you in a wheel chair totally dependent on others to care for you.
I raise this point because I've never seen it come up in weight loss and exercise discussions. So be honest and ask yourself do you want to risk doing that to your wife or children? I don't and I am going to do something about it. I've slacked off the last year or so and gained these pounds so now I've got to get them off and get in better shape.
If you had been able to see what the cost is to a loved one through my eyes, you would do it to.
Good luck and good health to you all.
^^^well said^^^
I have my own struggles as well.
Use artificial sweetener. Can't really tell the difference especially if you mix it in when its hot. Its all about habits and choices. Hard to shake those bad habits. Good luck.
doc told me i need to get in shape, i told him ROUND was a shape, he leaves me alone now.
Well you don't want to lose weight the way I did ,started losing wt this spring was having constant stomach pain and started losing my appetite Drs couldn't figure it out well the week before Thanksgiving we found the ans wound up in the er had lost half my blood. Found out I had a ulser in my tummy big as a 50cent piece. I dropped 44 lbs from april till now. Getting my appetite back and no more tummy pains.
I'm a the Dr right now getting a physical. I'm 6' 3" and 230 lbs, 2 years ago I was 10lbs lighter and got fussed at, so I know what's coming.
Guys, this is gonna be tough in such a short time. First, artificial sweetener (few, if any, calories) is sweeter than sugar and makes the body crave a sugar fix....candy bars, cokes etc. Anything you put in your body that is man made, your body generally has a hard time figuring out how to process (nature to nature is always best). Most man made stuff (MSG, and additives that make food "taste good") that doesn't get processed by the kidneys or liver, finds it's way into fat cells. Fact: Fat cells divide and multiply (mutate).....you don't loose fat cells, you reduced the size of the fat in the cells that have mutated. The only real way to REMOVE fat cells is liposuction. Protien cells, i.e. muscle, DO NOT mutate and divide. They individually grow because of good nutrition and exercise. When you go an a radical diet (NO carbs, Southbeach diet, etc.) the first placed the body looks to for nutrition (fuel) is protein (muscle)...so you can loose weight by shrinking your fat cells, but unless you eat plenty of good protein and exercise, you will loose muscle mass, in turn... strength, in turn....aide the aging process. So when you loose weight, have you noticed that it always comes back quicker than it went off, and usually a few extra pounds for all your trouble? There's a reason. Fat cells are still there, craving to be fed. There are 9 different hormones and processes the body uses to break down protein for proper placement in your body for energy and nutrition., five hormones and processes for fat, and three steps to process sugar. Sugar and fat go, almost, directly to the cells that store them...fat cells. And they get there quick. The longer it takes your body to break down food stuffs, the better, because it does it slowly, naturally, and uses every bit of nutrient it can before you expel the unneeded waste. In general, newest studies from people who do not have a horse in the race, indicate that pure butter, pure sugar (not corn syrup fructose crap), and anything natural in moderation is MUCH better for you than anything artificially made...."So Lite it Tastes Like Butter", and all that crap. Remember......TRUE: artificial sweeteners have zero/low calories, BUT they develop an addiction to "sweet". Coming off a addiction like that can take two weeks or longer, and it will really mess with your head. Almost as hard as nicotine or dope. I strongly suggest a great read: "The Calorie Myth"....it will rock your boat!!!! Who ever reads it first....get back with me. I'd love to have your feed back. And I truly don't have a dog in the fight. Just want every body to be as healthy as they can be. My wife is a NASMA licensed personal trainer, degreed in Exercise Physiology with an emphasis on nutrition. Docs and dieticians all are in the same "Food Group Nutrition Box" they were taught to stay in...Docs typically have one or two classes in college on nutrition, and generally they are electives. Who are they to know about good nutrition, except for what text books written by people with agendas have written. Know who made the "Food Pyramid" we all were taught to follow in school? Food companies and their lobbyists.
One more thing: Supplements: Are regulated by NO ONE. What they say is in the bottle doesn't necessarily mean that it is in the bottle. No oversight by any one. When you read the bottle and it says "other ingredients", always be suspicious ...what ARE the other ingredients. Several companies recently have gotten in deep trouble by adding HGH's and testosterone to their Super Duper Best Ever Protein Muscle Builder Powder, so they can get better results than the next company.....and nobody regulates them. Puts tremendous strain on the liver and kidneys, unknowingly. Unless you find the identification. .."NSF" ...which guarantees that the bottle contents have been "tested and certified"....run, and run fast. Without this certification, you don't know what you're putting into your body. Incidentally, with the NSF designation, professional athletes and Olympic athletes can take the contents of a bottle with complete guarantee for blood testing for doping, etc. Herbs are generally good, but did you know this: A leaf from a particular herb can be good for you, the stem may be moderately good for you, but the root may be poison. One herb may be good for you and so may another, but when combined they maybe very harmful, and most of these supplement companies refuse to do the adequate scientific, third party, blind studies that validate their product. It's a "Buyer Beware" notice on the bottle.
WOW!!! sorry for the rant, but good, unbiased information is TRULY hard to find, and I don't claim to know it all, certainly not. But, I have done EXTENSIVE individual research, read and listened to ALL sides, and have come to these conclusions for me personally. Thanks for your patience...now, GO FISH!!!!!
Yeah, the whole vitamin-supplement thingy is just so under (read: non) regulated. Without something constant to look at you just don't know what you're putting into that Temple. The only thing I have found by way of an additive is a product called Juice Plus....whole fruits and veggies, vine ripened, dehydrated, pulverized, and put into capsule form. It DOES carry the NSF lable. I don't sell it, but do take it. When you read a lable and it says "Supplemental Value"... it means that it is NOT regulated. If it says Nutritional Value, (in other words, a true food product)... know that it IS regulated by the FDA. Juice Plus Just gives you the green leafy and fruits and berries that most nutritionists say you need, that we don't get in our regular diet. Next time you're at a restaurant look at the plates around you......hardly any color to them...nothing green, red, yellow, purple, etc. Mostly brown and white. Starch, starch, starch, which turns to sugar if you don't immediately work it off. Fruits and veggies at the grocer are NOT vine ripened, where mot of the value in the food comes from. That only occurs in the last few days while attached to the vine or tree. Most grocer veggies and fruits are picked WAY before that process occurs. Wow...there I go again...sorry!
I caught a cold a while back. Ok, I need some honey to make me feel better. Now I use honey in my coffee instead of sugar. Now trying to change it in my tea.
Debbie bought a bathroom scale that I really like. It's one of the new glass style ones. I got on it 8 times today and like the reading, 40.4 pounds. A 10 lb. bag of flour doesn't read, 0.0.
Feb 1st I go back on my diet, last year was at 232 and got down to the 200 mark and maintained it pretty well till late fall. Back up to 213 but hope to have that 13 off by the middle of March.
Smooth, I disagree with doc, fishing is exercise too!!!:biggrin
Thanks for the seminar jimmydee1. Great info.
I've lost 100lbs over the last few years following the Suzanne Summers plan. It isn't a no carb diet, but you learn not to combine your carbs with your protein and fats. It is pretty much a sugar free, starch free plan. What is your opinion on this, and what is a better way if you don't agree with her idea?
BTW, I lost the 100lbs the first year, and have pretty much maintained for the last one.
I bought a box of Blue Bell fudge pops about helloween, I've had 1 since. I had a strawberry pop tart without icing last wednesday. Debbie stopped at BYB about 9 last night and got me a double hamburger with everything I like, no fries. I removed the bun half that doesn't have any fixings on it, fold the rest like a toco.
Just stay moving guys and the pounds will shed off like rain water... Problem for me is trying to stay moving with weather like this... Im 5'9" 283lbs.... Im NOT fat... Im Big Boned! lol
Hanging?
WTF are you talking about?
BigRiver, I don't hang myself out there to be any sorta expert, but I have done a bunch of self education on this because the docs simply regurgitate back to you what that one class taught them, or what the pharms. have 'sold them on'.I have seen hospital diet specialists completely miss the boat, because of the box they are in, on the ratio of protein to carbs to sugar. One thng they usually leave out is the emphasis on 'moving'...exercise. You don't have to kilol yourself, but a little effort daily won't "kill you". Personally, and with my little bit of research, you'll generally get plenty of carbs and sugar in a balanced..."what ever that means" diet. Processed food has so much of that crap in it to make it taste good that it really gets confusing. Something can say "zero" calories, and be terribly bad for you. Example: Soft drink mfgs say that drinking all the soda you want is ok because it helps hydrate you.....hummmmm!! Wonder what THEIR agenda is?? Here's the deal....when I feel the 'hunger twinge" I make myself grab a banana, orange or apple to take the edge off. Takes awhile to get to that point, but with effort and your good health at risk, it is worth the effort. And before long you develop a taste or craving for those raw veggies and fruit, much like we do for sodas, fried stuff, etc. A little of all that is not necessarily bad for you, but you can't get too much raw fruit and veggies and non-processed meat....I have deer in my freezer year around, as well as beef and pork. But I have really taken to tuna, baked crappie, broiled chicken, etc.
My frustration is when a doc says he doesn't believe in this or that, it's because he probably hasn't done ANY due diligence on it at all. Remember, most of them get paid to treat SYMPTOMS.... re-read that. I love my doc, but we have an understanding after several Come to Jesus meetings. We have a healthy understanding of where we are going, because WE have decided it, not just HIM. Grab "The Calorie Myth".....It will change your life as it relates to good, healthy eating and living longer....or not. Now, darnit...GO FISH!!!!
Rees, I'm on two diets.....can't get enough to eat on one....
