I routinely run two off each side easily including while fishing alone without any problem but a A/P troller is a must to control the boat. Keep in mind i have been pulling boards for five years and wouldn't recommend pulling four fishing alone for those just getting started. I have used three boards off each side but found it not worth the hassle. Using a down pole off the front of each side is much easier.

I use a mast and a dual planerboard setup when I have a partner. I use shower curtain rings with release/clips, up to 2 per side. After a catch, everything moves outward to fill the gap. The inner rod (regular trolling rod) is where I let the new crank go back out. With planerboard setup, you don't have to have long rods.
Hopefully this graphic will help as it is basically the same as my setup:

Small alligator clips soldered to the curtain rings with surgical tubing slid over the teeth work good too. That system is much better than separate planers in my opinion.
bfish I have a question. What stops slack from getting in the line the moment the line comes loose from the shower curtain ring? And as a follow-up, what happens if it never comes loose and it's on the outside position?
I've used 2 boards per side for a total of 4 lines out w/o much trouble, can get a bit busy if you get into them tho. I use 6.5 and 7' rods, the same ones when I long line. It takes a while to get the lines out and running like you want 'em, but then its easy once you get some practice at it (maybe 30 minutes tops) :biggrin I use a single 4 rod holder on the back of the boat when using planer boards and have a Terrova with IP. The Terrova makes it easy.
blueball I use 7 foot MH rods that I get from Bass Pro. It's called the Tourney. I tried using a Medum action but found myself breaking off tips when using them with boards. I have six of these and they are all setup identical with a spooled back up reel in a storage compartment. I have never broken a MH in 5 years. Sometimes I'll pull one or two lines directly off the back which makes for a very nice rotation when it's time to get a bait back in the water but usually a down pole placed midway down the side will out perform one thrown directly out the back. Hope this helps.
Good questions.
Slack happens time to time, but rarely does the fish get off (less than 5% of the time). The shower curtain ring (and clip) will then slide toward the planer board.
If the clip is too tight or if it is something small (weeds or small white bass etc) or you just want to bring it in (say change colors), then the line can be unclipped by lifting rod out of the holder and then snapping the rod upward. This snap will then cause the line in the clip to slide out.
PS i just use my Spyderlok rod holder as my mast. If you starting out, a forward anchor cleat will work too.
The traditional answer is to free spool the inside board until its behind the fish on the outer board but the reality is if you don't fish extremely deep and have the patience to wait until the fish surfaces you can ski him in front of the inside board.

Bfish the slack was my concern with the soft tissue around a crappies mouth which can tear or get an elongated hole quite easily. I have watched several You Tube videos using that system but usually they are chasing larger and stronger fish with a harder mouth.

My mast is just a Spyderlok rod holder mounted on my bow cap. I used some old metal reels (for wire fishing), but large fly reels would work to hold the line (no rope). I then zip-tied a small pulley to the ends of the rod holder. Rod holder is 24" tall.
My old man uses a piece of PVC mounted into a seat base (3" diameter, I believe).
As far as "rope" goes, I use "planer board line" which I think is just heavy dacron line. I think I am on year 9, but it is time to replace.
This is the best picture I have. You might be able to make out things if you look at my fish bud's rear, haha.
EDIT to add: I am trolling with a kicker. When on short solo or low wind days I can go with my trolling motor (only 12v single battery right now).

I have pulled jigs with planer boards especially when they prefer for the bait to be moving slowly (.9 - 1.1) which is still long lining speed.
I prefer 10# mono for pulling cranks.
