Barrel swivel. I only single pole in the spring- wade fishing. You will get lots of info. Lots of GREAT single polers on this site who will help you any way they can.
Hey, can't contribute anything useful here, Cardsfan', but am interested as well. Haven't crappie fished much in many years, but am bewildered by the change of thought towards the hi-vis line. Was a time when the lightest, least visible line produced the best results. I realize it can be argued many ways, but curious as to what's changed the thinking. Thanks.
I put swivels up about 18'' so it doesn't effect way jig it tied on and hangs. Small Barrel swivels can be pulled up through the rod eyes if need be. I have fished with bigger Tube jigs for years and seen lots of folks get upset with line twist. A simple barrel swivel will take care of it most times.:twocents
On the other question , a clear leader can't hurt when using hi-vis even though some folks say it does'nt matter. I never liked hi-vis my self.
Really think the line depends on the water clarity. My dad and his fishing partner fished the St. Francis, Brandiwine, midway, and island 40, and many more of the murkier/muddier oxbows for a lot of years using nothing but 14# Stren gold colored line and always caught plenty of good quality fish. As for me, I prefer my 20# Vanish, and the only time I use a barrel swivel is if I want to keep an egg weight up away from the jig. I don't generally use a swivel when jigging because I generally jig in water shallow enough to use my pole to bump the jig loose when the hook wont straighten out enough to come loose on its own. And yes, I break a lot of rod tips, that is why I generally start with 11' poles and keep new tips in the tackle box, once the pole gets down to about 9 1/2" long, I replace the front section. Just my two cents worth...your mileage may vary...
I use a size 14 barrel swivel on my 10 ft ozarks to go thru the eyes when i get snagged.
I never use high vis, but in water that not very clear don't think it would matter, and I have witnessed the use of a swivel in deep water "20ft or deeper " I does help with line twist
Ya mean i taught you a trick
Either one will help keep the twist out of your line. I tie a fas snap on the end of my main line On the last batch of leaders I tied up with Wally world swivels. Some barely snapped shut... Had to rebend the wire. So the barrel route may be better way to go
I fish a deep clear water lake and use hi vis braid on all my crank bait rods and my long lining rods with no leader. might try something different if I was single poling.
HiVis spider Rig yes I use a barrel swivel and clear leader. Never use Hi vis using single pole or a swivel. Vetical Jigin wth a 10 foot Ozark I feel em if they breath on it... and don't really need to see my line. Hi V will spook shallow fish.
That's cause you can't see the line on how cp lol, but you feel the thump good!
Always use a swivel and 6# flouro leader. Swivel takes place of split shot (hazardous in Calif!!) and allows use of lighter jig and still get down fast. 8# Nanofil main line is highly visible and if I can see it with my eyes, those crappie sure as heck can! Don't use rod to free hung jig. Can paint barrell of swivel with nail polish (pink) makes a good teaser!!

Hi-vis/clear line, painted jig/unpainted jig, I catch the same amount of fish. Water here is murky.
I use Hi-Vis with swivel and a clear leader line. I do like the small swivel so you can pull it thru the eyes when needed.
At this time of year I mainly fish deep holding two rods. I use 20 lb braided line (it has a good feel; I like the way it fishes) with a fast snap tied to it. Then I make leaders using flouracarbon; tie a swivel on top and your jigs below that. Then I store them on a "Tackle Buddy" from Bass Pro.When you break of this prevents having to re-tie; you can be fishing again in less than a minute. All you have to do is unsnap the old swivel and snap the new leader on.
Cp between your cataracts and me without reading glasses I know neither one of us could see the line when we fished roflmbo. You sure felt the thump though he heh he he.
Yes please on the lessons too ha ha ha
We fish Bull Shoals, northfork,Greers Ferry,Ouachita (clear water),White river Bottom lakes(dingy water) Ozark 10' jigpole, shimano 1000 reels. A good crappie fishermen friend showed us the 10lb and 12lb berkely Nano in clear mist!!! No swivels,no twists, kind of pricey but worth it!! Can see your line jump in the wind!! Not a Pro but This works for Us in all these waters!!!
Your a good man JW...I dont care what they say about ya LOL. And a great partner to see and adjust my electronics for me. Thanks Brother will get em again soon.
You bet man I be ready for more lessons soon too. I gotta get me some reading glasses before next time. Wife says I need eye exam which I probably do lol. I am going deaf and blind lol.
I fish the muddy water oxbows of the Mississippi and White Rivers, Reelfoot and on up to the clear water reservoirs like Norfork, Greers, Ouachita, etc.,. My line of choice is Berkley Solar XT. It is a high vis line that I like and on familiar waters I don't have issues catching fish. I grew up using the Stren Golden line also and I still like to see my line, no matter what depth I'm fishing, especially when I'm using 1/80 ounce jigs. That's just how I do it and it works for me.
