I will be switching to Hummingbird over this winter. I am wondering what additional items I will need for a 1199 at the console and a 1159 at the bow that will not come with the units? I want to be able to share waypoints between the two units. Will I also need an additional transducer to get depth readings while on plane? I am running a 08' Ranger 198 VX.
Just a Ethernet cable to hook them together.put a cheapo in the dash for that
I was thinking of leaving the 520 Lowrance in the dash for GPS and depth usage. Probably the cheaper route to go. Also thought about replacing it with a HDS5 with Insight. I loved the mapping from Lowrance on the HDS units on my last boat. But feel the Bird's have the edge on side imaging after using my tournament partners in his Triton through out the year. Would running the Lowrance in dash beside the 1199 on a Ram mount cause any interference issues between the two units?
If you are speaking about running the Lowrance as just a GPS and no transducer, there should be no interference. If running a transducer for sonar on each unit, you will have to run them on different frequencies.
I seen a discussion on another website about a 899, looks like Humminbird changed the Ethernet connection to be included in the cable collector, if the 1199 and 1159 is the same a adapter may be needed. I would ask the dealer when buying to make sure. Most people add the Y cable and a transducer in the hull for better high speed 2D depth.
They are coming straight from Hummingbird on a sponsorship deal and I have no idea what the Ethernet connection or cable collector looks like on them. Not a lot of info on these units yet from what I can find. I can always purchase and add another shoot through hull puck if needed. I was just wanting to run the Lowrance that is already in dash for GPS and for depth reading while on plane. Once I am off plane is when I would be running the 1199 for side imaging and then the depth reading would work at idle speeds with the transom transducer. Guess I could always sell the two Lowrance units on the boat now to purchase the Y cable and extra shoot thru transducer. Guess I will know more in a few weeks when I get the units.
Leave the Low in dash for depth at speed. Even if you leave it on it is different frq than bird so should not cause any interference. Side by side should be no electronic interference.
No-one knows too much about the 99 series yet.
As was mentioned earlier, the ethernet connector is different on the 899.
I think they all have an internal antenna. For the one at the console, I would seriously consider getting an external GPS antenna to mount close to the transom transducer. Getting the one with the heading sensor would be even better.
Hopefully Humminbird will have the specs and manuals on the website soon.
Bass Pro in Independence MO had the new 600 series and a 899 on display today. Did not have time to look them over to well but looked pretty good. A little different finish/color to them. I have about talked myself into leaving the Lowrance in dash now. Save the money from buying a new Hummingbird shoot thru transducer to put towards a external GPS antenna with heading sensor. I will have the side imaging transducer mounted below jackplate on a Tightwad Stump Jumper so could mount antenna just above it in front of motor. Have any of you seen this ducer saver? Local tournament fisherman is making these in Tightwad, MO here on Truman lake.
He makes these for Hummingbird and for Lowrance units. Spring loaded for up and down movement and has a cage around it for added protection. Not cheap but these transducers for side imaging units are not cheap either. He even powder coats them in several different colors. I bought one in a fundraiser auction that was held here on Truman lake for stroke awareness in memory of the late Ned Rutledge.

The 1199, 1159 and 899 all have a different Ethernet connection on them as do the other 2014 model 800/900/1100 series units. This is so the Ethernet connector can be brought into the connector collector and not be a separate connection. As such you will need an Ethernet Adapter Cable (AS-EC-QDE) for each unit plus one Ethernet Connection Cable (AS-EC-XXE, where “XX” is the length of the cable). The connection cables come in 2, 10, 15, 20 and 30 foot lengths.
Thanks Greg. One more question that you may have an answer for. Will the 1159 support the 360 imaging or will I have to have a 1199 up front for it? Really thinking the 360 would be very helpful when rigging over stake beds and brush piles. Would make it easy to see them before the rods got to them and if they were off to one side of center on the screen you would know to turn the boat in that direction to put the baits over the top of them.
Only Side Imaging models can use the 360 Imaging products, so the 1159 would not be able to use it.

I ended up with a 1159 and a 1199. Kimber sent me a 20' Ethernet cable and two adaptors. What transducer will I need for the thru hull? Also what is the number for the Y cable and is there a switch needed to go from one ducer to the other? Thought I seen somewhere about having to switch back and forth.

This is the AS SIDB Y cable...this setup disconnects the 2d element from the HDSI xducer and instead wires in the shoot thru xducer for 2d readings...(no switch need for this setup)...

One more question. Is there any advantage to the shoot thru ducer other than reading depth while on plane? Not sure I really need to have depth on plane when fishing on Truman. I have ran it for years and pretty well know where I can safely run. At 65mph its to late by the time you see you are shallow water to shut it down in time. The SI/DI ducer should read fine at idle speeds which is where I need a depth reading while idling into creeks and such. It is not that much money to buy the ducer and Y cable if it will help in any other way. If not I may wait to see if I miss the depth reading while at speed.
im sure youll be happy with your two new units but i think a 1198 and 1199 with 360 would have been the better option because what you asked about the 360 being used to see the structure before getting hung up and being able to tell were the structure is to keep your poles were you want them is correct.(you no how when you use gps to locate a known waypiont and it always seems like you go a little to far or you always seem to end up off to one sode or the other well while using 360 that wont happen any more you always have control of were the boat is in reference to your waypionts.it makes fishing alot easier)Quote:

I knew I seen it somewhere that the 1159 was compatible with the 360. Then I could not find it again anywhere. Was thinking I seen it at Bass Pro shop on a box or on the little touch screen demo video they had playing of the 360. Would be nice to be able to upgrade to 360 later with out having to sell my 1159 and then get another 1199 for the bow to use the bow mount 360. Which is where I would want it.
I hope you didn't get your 1159 to use with the 360, a call to customer service yesterday did reveal that info on the box is a misprint.
No plan for a 360 yet. But would be nice option to have later. I am in the units cheap enough I could always sell and upgrade to another 1199 and 360 later. Will also see what the ION units do for reviews during this next year or so to.
If you're serious about your fishing, you might want to send that 1159 back in the box it came in and get another 1199 and the 360. I love it more and more each time I go out.
All I fish for is crappie and 90% of the time it is dipping standing timber. Not sure how much the 360 would help me on my home lake of Truman.
You'll be surprised. Its better the slower you are going. Why dip barren timber? I'd keep that 1159 in the box and contact your sponsor about returning.
I don't dip, I'm a troller, but this past Sunday, I found a school on Guntersville and without 360 would have never been able to stay on them. In the past, I would have caught two or three, have it dry up and move on. With 360, I saw where the school moved and stayed with them, picking off active fish all afternoon.
