Chatt,
I have a 17.5 foot Grady White, which looks to be similar to the boat you are thinking about. My Grady is pretty heavy- the empty hull ( no motor or gas) weighs 1500 lbs. it has pretty high freeboard, so I never worry about anything on the local lakes. I have fished mine in the Gulf a fair bit, and on a good day I don't mind fishing 10-15 miles off shore. In fact, I have been out as far as 20 miles off Ft. Morgan, Alabama. That being said, it is not the greatest boat for crappie fishing or fishing some of the lakes around here. The hefty freeboard that makes it a good bay boat also makes it hard to hold a good position on the local lakes when it is windy. On the other hand, it is a great all around boat- bay, near shore in the ocean, and larger lakes.

Look'n Good.Very nice:ThumbsUp
Funny, I was just looking at some carolina skiffs and was thinking they would be pretty handy with that wide open no carpet lay out.
A couple of things- a few years ago the Carolina Skiffs were having some quality problems, I don't know what happened from there, but you might want to look in to it before dropping some bucks.
The bare floor and wide open space is a common feature of saltwater boats. Blood, guts and scales just wash out through the scuppers in the back. Great for fishing. My point is that the bay boat may not be the ideal boat for crappie fishing. They are MUCH better for bay and near shore saltwater fishing than a crappie boat would be, but a crappie boat would probably be a better choice on the local lakes.
