Mines not pushing alot of water and think it may need changing out. This makes it look REAL EASY. how to replace waterpump " 90 hp mercury outboard - YouTube
I've got an 01 90 hp merc and....it is very simple. Most important thing is to put it in gear before you pull it down. The first time I did it, I had to whack the lower unit with a rubber mallet pretty good to get it loose, but everytime after it comes right off. Takes less than an hour.
if it doesn't seem like a lot of water is coming out, pull the cover and pull the hose off the fitting where the water shoots out of the motor and let it pump directly out of the hose for a minute and make sure you don't have any debris clogging the hole in the fitting. Make sure you are ready to catch the fitting when you pull the hose cause it will fall right out of the motor when hose isnt connected. I've run into that a couple of times also. Just my 2 cents.
Nuttin to it
I pulled the cover the other day on the water and checked to see if the hose was stopped up. It appeared to be clean and no obstuctions. Gonna recheck it this evening.
I have been doing my own for years
I wanna check it good tonight so IF it needs replacing, I can do it tomorrow night. I plan on feshing from Friday after work til sunday afternoon LOL
Do not try and hold off from doing this like you do everything else. Very simple job and should only cost you very little money
Supposed to do it every year or two, Don. You don't want to wait until it fails.
They had just replaced it when I bought the boat. Recon 2 1/2 years ago
The last one I did was on my 115 Yamaha four stroke....the impellor, gasket, and seals were about 40 bucks......the boat place wanted $250 to do it.....so yep you will save money. I try to replace every three years even if the pee hole is still putting out a good stream.
I've been watching the stream on my 90 expecting to have to do this at any time now. It's an '08 model so it's due.
That video makes it look really easy so long as you have something to hold the foot while you're working on it.
Done mine on old boat for yrs by myself a few times.. It's a 200.. Nothing to it
Do you normally just replace the impeller or the gaskets that go with it too? Lots of seals and gaskets here that the video said nothing about (3214 for a 90): MERCURY OUTBOARD WATER PUMP KITS AND IMPELLERS --Mastertech Marine--
Just called and they said the part was like $35 is all. I know I had the old boat changed out and it was pushing $200. Think I'll just go ahead and take it out tonight and replace it tomorrow after work. Shouldn't take but 30 minutes to take it out is all. I WILl video taking the parts off though so I can put them back in the way they came out. LOL
I replace the gasket and the seals involved with the impellor....I do not want to risk useing them over again after I have disturbed them....They do not cost that much....Like I said on my 115 Yamaha ....the total cost of gasket seals, and impellor was only 40 bucks. They wcan tell you at the boat place when you get your impellor what all you need to do the job
Sure...what could happen....right?
Jus be sure to put your meter to it when your done.
Wannabe...
I will say this....its not easy......and its not what I would call real hard, but it can be kinda tricky sometimes. Main thing is get the new impellor blades bent or curved in the same direction as the old one or it won't pump water right....then going back together you have to line up the driveshaft, the gearshift shaft, and the speedometer hose all at the same time.....sometimes that can give you a pain. Also one other tip......You have to pop the plastic plug so you can get a socket in to remove your steering trim tab because one of the bolts that holds your lower houseing on is under the trim tab.
It's so easy......Even A Donald can do it......if you get to a point where you think you need duct tape... Well call for help!!!!!!!
Here's another utube video, with a bit better camera angles and all, I think this video is for a 40 or 50 merc, but all the parts and process looks very similar.
Pt.1 Force Mercury 40HP Outboard Water Pump Replacement - YouTube
Doesn't look bad n when I blow water through the Jose it appears to be blog freeAttachment 120273
On a serious note....
The worst thing you could ever do for a water pump... Is crank your outboard out of water dry.. The water works as a lubricant. If you start it dry the friction will burn the ends off of your impellers. It only takes a minute. I see it all the time people cranking their engines before they put it in the lake. Wet is good... Dry is bad... Just like...well I best not!!!
Don...you can do it, take your time!!!
Lol Tush. You know me to well brotha
Ill turn it over til it cranks n shut it down instantly. I don't let it run at all just enough to make sure it'll crank
Thats not good DD...It only takes a second to damage the tips of the impellor....... Get a set of muff to put on it if you want to see if it cranks
Got a set G. Use them after my salt water trips to flush it out
Your impellor will last a lot longer Don if you use those muffs
As G stated, be sure to get the blades leaned in the same direction as the one you took out, if ya dont, bad news, if its been that long go ahead and change it DD, I have had em quit pumpin on smaller motors and when I too em out they didnt look bad at all. Like Feelay said this needs to be done every two years at a minimum. JMO
That impellor pictured does not show much wear but the blades have taken a set which they all do over time and that reduces the efficiency of the pump.
In going tomorrow n getting a new one. I done took it out now lil
I got a 60 horse Mercury and you best not even look at the key unless it's in the water or the water hose on it.
I have just bumped the starter before and messed it up.
I have changed it about 3 times that I can remember, I buy them two at a time now.
I usually put a little grease on mine to aid in getting it all in there.
Reaaaaal easy
Cuervo lol
