Well the little fellers are right around the corner, if you are not looking maybe you should. I talked to my cousin yesterday and they found 11 gallons of reds just south of Truman Lake on Wednesday!

:yikes If the reds are up, the morels won't be far behind....woo hoo!!
Could you post a pic of some of these "reds" please? I don't know of them, but I sure love to eat mushrooms!! Thanks

Tim,
Here's a pick of a red morel .. alot of people call them false morels .. due to their chemical makeup, alot of people say you shouldn't eat them and if you do, they should be prepared a little different (I think you have to boil them for awhile). I'd definitely do a little research before frying some up.

I have never eaten one either, my cousin eats them all the time and his dad did also. I think they just slice and fry but will check with him and let you know.
Just talked with him, he just slices as
they are solid, then batter and fry. He said they are not as good as morels but he likes them. Also said some people don't like them at all!
All this mushroom talk has me excited for morels .. should be soon!
Thanks! Now I'm Hungry!!!!
I can't tell a difference between them myself....I have never found a HUGE red one before though either, that might be the difference. The biggest one I have found was around baseball.
Here is a picture of a picture my cousin had of the ones they found this week! I talked him into trading mushrooms for some crappies. On the menu for tomorrow night, will let ya know what I think!

Here's a link you might want to check out....when you do eat these, at least for the first time, try just a little bit before you eat a ton.
Jerky i see you live in Grain Valley.I lived there for 15 years and if ya will call me i will tell ya a place in town that is a gold mine for Morels.I used to walk it every year and fill 5 gallon buckets with them.:santa I just cant run up there every other day to check it anymore.I might ask ya to bring me some to Truman though.
Pm me if ya are interested and i will give ya my phone #
I found 1 smokie on March the 12, and found 9 smokies today. Usually I find about 50-75 smokies in this spot but usually not till about april 1st. Everything is so early this year, if we continue to get the rain it could an excellent year. Without the rain they will come up and dry out pretty quick
Almost forgot i am finding afew Reds down here but they are just starting to pop.And i also just slice and dip in egg and then roll them in crushed saltine crackers and fry. Some people get upset stomach from them and some dont so start with alittle bit and if you come out ok eat up.
hhhmmmmm i live a stone's throw away from grain valley;) i usually find some out at blue and gray park if i can beat the crowd's! may get out and check jacomo today! my buddy kyle is in brownington fishing creek and strip pit's and he found a bunch of red's.. he said 2 were the size of volleyball's! i don't care for the red's and they make my stomach hurt:(

I don't eat verry many, but Miss Sharon loves them morels,,,
Here are a few pic's of dinner tonight! If'n ya never here from me again (some might be glad) it might be because I like them!!!!!! Egg wash, flour, salt and pepper. Fry in butter? Who would not like that??????????

Jerkey! Hey, Jerkey! You still around Jerkey?
I might look after the rain this week . I have a private spot north of KC I found a good mess of Morels in last year .
Still here! Gonna have to cook some more tonight.
went back to the spot where I had found just a few smokey morels friday, and I found 26 smokey morels, the rain must have shot them up overnight.
I found some blacks in Hillsboro on 3/18
I'm thinking I might just have to go look for some. I have never looked for them but I do love to eat them.
I went lookin' a couple times last year to no avail. Course, word on the street was it was a tough year....not enough moisture. But I know some people did real well. I've never found one in my life. Never eaten one either. But someday. Oh yes.....someday.
we found none this am, and none this pm and none tomorrow, or the next day.....
I found my first two of the year .. little tiny guys, just barely peeking up, but it should get good in the next few days. (KC area)
Joe,
I can't believe a good Kearney boy like yourself has never found or eaten a morel. My Grandad lived in Kearney and used to take me all around there when I was a kid. Of course, those spots are all houses now, but still.
check out morels.com they have a MO forum board and they have been finding em. I can never find em maybe a handful a year.
I found a mother lode last year , but I'm not telling where . nonono
