I have $600 to spend. What do you recommend for a GPS Combo with Down Imaging. I don't have to have GPS. Down imaging or side imaging is OK. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Bassky

Hey Bassky, send a PM to EFslabs (Brian) he just bought a Lowrance (not sure of model) and he is thrilled with it.
I got the Lowrance Elite 5 DSI from BBG Marine. With the rebate it was under $500. I've only had it out once, but I REALLY like it so far. Next time you head out to East Fork, let me know and you can take a look at it on the water and see for yourself. I know some people didn't like it because it doesn't have the 2D also, but with the DSI I don't see why you would need it. No more wonder if you are sitting over fish or a brush pile.
Cabela's has a Humminbird, I think model 587 and then some initials, on sale for about $500. It has down imaging and gps as well as the regular dual beam sonar. I'm eyeing it pretty seriously.
Entry level SI is going to be closer to $1000 (or a little more) ...unless you buy used...
Both brands make DI GPS units in the $600 range..
The biggest feature difference is :
Lowrance would be DI/GPS...
HB would be 2d/DI/GPS....
Some guys find they don't need 2d with DI...
Some guys want both 2d and DI..
Personal preference...only you can make that decision...

Its at the top of the electronics page. Pretty good reading so far, I got through the second page during lunch.
I found it, and it's a hossl
Sorry, it looks like I had issues pasting my link. Not sure how to edit the post.
Maybe this one will work.

i like the humminbird 597hd/di.heres some pictures.please remember that with what ever unit that you decide to go with depending on the conditions that you experience on the waters that you use your unit and the bottom structure/hardness you will get different results.the pictures that im showing are from kentucky/barkley lakes
Thank you everyone for your input. I just bought a Hummingbird 798Ci HD SI side imaging unit with GPS. It only has a 5" screen but that is all I have been using for the past 5 years. I am sure I will be looking for help on this one, just like everyone else. Can't wait to start playing with it. Got it at Cabelas for $759. I went to Bass Pro and they were $1100. Couldn't pass up the savings and spent $160 more than what I was planning on spending.

The only thing I would add is that Cabelas add for the $759 HB ..is for the 798ci SI Combo...NOT the 798ci HD SI Combo...
798ci SI Combo is the older "non-ethernet compatible" unit..$759
798ci HD SI Combo is the new "ethernet compatible" unit....$1049
It is still possible to connect this 798ci SI Combo to another HB SI unit with the optional "Interlink" module....
$759 is still a good price...if you don't need ethernet capability....

i have the Humingbird 597HD DI. Great imaging. Its like looking at a photo of whats under the boat. i love it.
Glad to hear the reports on the Hummingbird 597. I just ordered the 597 ci HD DI Combo GPS. Probably need to find some 10 year old to educate me on how to use it.
I still don't know what ethernet is or means or does.
In the past, 2 HB units had to be connected using an "Interlink" module...to be able to share info between the 2 units...
Ethernet allows 2 HB units (ethernet capable) to be hooked together without the "Interlink" module... Using only a cable to connect the 2 HB units together...
Rickie
No ethernet with 597,sorry
Thanks kosmo... I didn't know that myself...

Does the 597 have speed sensor
The one I just ordered has gps, so I would assume it has speed. I sent a question to Cabela's which is on the listing on the 597 ci HD DI, etc. along with other questions. I know I asked about water temp, but I can't remember if I asked about speed. The answer to whatever I asked was yes.
yes speed and water and temp. but if you need the ethernet you will have to go to the 788 and up series
If I had an ethernet, I would have to get my wife or kids to do it.
