I just mounted my Humminbird 570 DI on the boat yesterday. I think it is a major improvement over the little Cudas I been using. I bought on the low end as I already have a couple handhelp GPS units.

I think you bought a great Unit CA, I love Hummingbird Units. For me I use the colored sonar screen, its just easier on my eyes.
I'm like a kid, I want,,I want, I want...I'd like one of the big screen jobbies to mount next to console, it looks so professional, but then in reality, I ain't smart enough to take advantage of what I already have, a HB 597 HD di..
I am totally impressed with the down imaging, it amazes me how great the images are and if I coyuld do what the unit is capable of, I "might'' catch more fish..but I couldn't possibly have more fun than I did as a kid with a cane pole, a stopper out of a medicine bottle for a cork, a hair hook and a bed of bream...
Getting dressed now,,going fishing somewhere, muddy or not..
I upgraded to a Low Mark 5 pro, for the front and console, just don't have the console one mounted yet. Looked at/considered the DI more than the SI but decided to stay with just 2d as I usually fish the same areas on a regular basis, use a HH gps and have all my structure marked with it. Would like to have the DI/SI units but not willing to spend the $$ for 'em.
Ill be out there with you in spirit this morning Don only it will be on Lake Conway.
Just added an HDS10 Gen2 to my console.
Already had the HDS8 on console, and added the HDS7 on bow
Started with the cuda, but went to a humminbird 718 and connected my hand held gps to it. Carol just bought a 798 for me at Christmas and I have run it on the water twice to check for operation and interference but have not fished with it. Still got the 718 where it really matters, on the bow.
Bought a Humminbird 998 c si last year. Unbelievable what you can see with this thing. Doesn't mean you can always catch 'em but it is fun to use.
I'm using the Hummer low end, can't spend the $ for the bigger ones although I really like them. I also think they will come down in price just as the flat screen tv's have, labtops, digital cams, ect. I've got two guys whom I fish with and they have the DI/SI models that are really nice. I've just settled for the Nav package on my I phone to navigate by recently but finding that all important brush underneath the surface would be nice.
I've been looking at DI units similar to yours. I've said it before....I hope yo let us know how you like it, once you try it out and get used to it.
Hey Nimrod - I run a HB898. With stick steering I only need one depth finder. The thing that I really like is the side image. You can mark structure that is in the side image without being over it and go back to it with the GPS screen. HB makes a great unit
i have two birds in my fishing machine a 596hd di up front and 798hd si combo in the console!!! nimrod got to see what both had to offer in the fall !!!!!!!!!
My demos are for sale. HDS-10, and an HDS-7. Love em.
BRM
dont sellem until after the 25th, might need em!!!!!!!!!!
I had 2 older Eagle fish finders until 2weeks ago on my Lowe 175w. I had been contemplating an upgrade and made the mistake of attending the Humminbird operational seminar at Grizzly Jig. I ended up purchasing a 385ci di. I bow mounted it and was sufficiently impressed last Thursday when I had it out for the first time, that I decided I needed to upgrade the console unit as well. My friend is a Lowrance guy so for the console I got an Elite-5 Gold on the way. I know that means format conversions on waypoints etc, but I already have the gpx's in a usr format and ready to upload when I get the Lowrance...
I'm using a lower end lowrance on the back end for temp. and depth and some structure. On the front I have a color garmin and its pretty nice maybe one day I will be able to upgrade to one of the big boy units.
My 898c si hummingbird will be here tomorrow!!
You will love it camo.
I have the 788 di unit and like it. If i had enough money i would have bought a side imaging unit. I really like having the built in gps for marking locations and the speed readout is very important. Overall cost was average 600 dollars or so. It does everything i need in one though. I have had less than a year though and already had to send in to have gps repaired on it. They fixed in a timely manner and have great tech support.
Guys I love my new 570 DI. Yesterday my buddy and I fished individual stumps and could see fish around them. The current had them so tight if you bumped a stump there usally was a fish on your line. A big tree suspended will show individual limbs. I can spot Bamboo as it looks like a ghost image and leaves appear real light image. Keep thinking of try'n to atempt a photo but unsure if glare wash it out?
Ditto on glare dawn soapy water works good
Nimrod just gona let you know when my wife freaks out because i buy a new Humming bird DI I am gona blame you!!!! LOL I have a low end HB Fish finder but wow that DI Looks Great. I have a hand held GPS so not gona get the combo.
I have transducers front and rear with switch hope that will still work. We just bought an old pontoon boat for spearfishing/scuba diving. wonder if i can xfer it between boats?
Nimrod, I think they made those(down image) finders to keep us from fishing. I still start fishing and find myself looking around for structure, or just see what is down there. I finally started changing settings, and still can't believe it's as good as some underwater camera's. I have to keep mine on broadband, and chart to get any fishing done.
Nimrod, glad to hear how much you like it. I've been eyeing a HB 587ciDI that's on sale at Cabela's for $500.
just got my elite 5-DSI. Anybody ever used one?
Well I wasn't thinking about upgrading. But now that I've been reading all the good comments......
Well after getting over a little buyers remorse I put the new 898c si on my 18 ft camo xpress . The install was pretty simple , now I just need a few days away from work to try it out , so far in simulator mode it seems to be really awesome , I bet it will be worth every penny!!
You gonna love it....making me think that mine is outdated, a relic, hey, perfect, a relic, for a relic!!! Perfect combination!
I'm doing a real upgrade: going from none to a DI.
Also, here is a solution that solves the glare. Typically, glare is because of anything on the screen, water drops, fingerprints will make this 10X worse. If the screen is clean, less glare.
Go here, and buy the 2 items listed. They are dirt cheap, but make a HUGE difference. Do not go on ebay and buy a custom screen cover, buy the iPad2 cover below, use a razor blade, and odds are you can make 2-4 covers for less than 2 bux. I think China-Mart sells something similiar, but from what I have seen, it is not of high quality, and kinda pricey for what it is.
Let me add this as well, the cleaning kit is the only thing I use on laptops, iPads, Cells, regular lcd monitors, heck any kind of screen including tv's. I run a network with over 750 devices and this is all I use. The key is shake the heck outta it so the oils will mix good. Yes I said oil, thats why you never use any product with alchohol to clean glass. (Like Windex, /shrug) Alchohol dries a screen out, the slight oil keeps it conditioned. It is a cleaner and protector. Oh and by the way, this is the BEST product I have ever found for tinted windows in your vehicle.
I listed 2 versions of the cleaner, pick which will suit your needs overall. I like the small one in a Ziploc stashed on the boat. BTW, there is a youtube video showing how to apply the protector. If you have never done one, watch it, till ya have done a few, bubbles can be an issue.
One more note, check that site out, they have the best prices on all their products by far. Noone is even close to them. We spend 5-6k a year with them.
iPad Protective screen (These sell for $20-$30 each local)
For only $1.01 each when QTY 50+ purchased - Screen Protective Film w/ High Transparency Finish for iPad 2 | iPad 2 Screen Protectors
2 types of screen cleaners.
For only $3.63 each when QTY 50+ purchased - Universal Screen Cleaner (Large bottle w/ brush) for LCD & Plasmas TV, iPads, iPhones, Galaxy Tabs, and smartphones | Cleaning Kits for LCD/Plasma TV & Monitor
For only $7.11 each when QTY 50+ purchased - Premium Screen Cleaning Kit w/ Tools for LCD & Plasma Displays | Cleaning Kits for LCD/Plasma TV & Monitor
Hopefully someone found this informative. :)

I use the Humminbird 898si on the console atm as I couldnt afford the 1198si after purchasing the Predator last year. I am adding the 1198si to the back, and moving the 898si to the front this year. (actually thinking the other way around as I am in the front more than rear) Noone told me after spending 20k on a boat that the actual accessories would hurt the pocket.
I also have the AS RSL Humminbird Wireless Sonar Link with 2 Smartcast modules that allow the bird to read the transducer attached to a fishing line to be cast and check depths and fish in areas you cannot go in. This is amazing when your running the border of the dams on the river. Problem is, the 790, 990, and 1190 series are the only ones that will read em. Sitting on $100 worth a stuff for a year never been able to use. LOL Cant wait for 1198 next month!
I have the Cannonlink as well. Which will run downriggers. If say your on Greers or Ouachita and you've got baits at 100 foot, and the depth comes up to 60 fast, it will pull the baits up before they hit it automatically. This is great for chasing Hybrids and Stripers in the summer. It can run up to 6.
I also heard that if you install 2 transducers, on 2 units with the ethernet link (which I already have) that the top speed they read accurately goes from 7mph to 50mph. This is conflicting info, if anyone knows, I sure would like confirmation.
I have the VC1 cable which is awesome as it allows you to take the unit from the boat, and plug it into your tv and see MUCH more that a small screen could ever show. Couple this with the AS PC2 which allows your computer to show all the information, and plot trips in advance, the Humminbird is far superior to any out. If you can afford one, (or not) GET IT. It is amazing.
I can actually show you everywhere I have gone, on any water, and some of the amazing footage from these trips at any given time due to the SD CARD storage.
If you have any questions, ask away!

Have a cuda on my jon boat, and 2 lowrances on my bass boat. Just had to replace my 1995 LMS -350A on my bassboat. It was a good one.
What is the ethernet? I tried looking at the Humminbird website, but never figured it out.
Humminbird's site is messed up at the moment so I cannot send a link there, but here is where I bought mine. United Outdoors has some of the best prices out there for HBird.

Basically, if you have 2 units, and 2 transducers, they share information making the imaging much better and accurate. Also takes away the need for multiple Barometric Pressure sensors, GPS, Weathersense, etc. as they share all information between them.
just got a new 18 ft lund. have the 1198 c si on back and 788 hb ci sonar and internal on front. not sure how to operate these as of yet. havent got it all on the comp. yet. seems like u have to be careful how u turn them on and off as u can erasa a lot on the information u have on them. need on water classes to learn all this.

Nah... You need on water. They ain't that hard. I have seen some of the most amazing images on Greer's. Literally from 20' to 100' instant and boulders at that depth. My wife constantly said " Why the hell did you waste $1700 on a depth finder" .... I can't tell you how many times on Greer's I said "That's why... That's why!" More importantly, shallow water. The side imaging can be adjusted. I have seen down trees 20'-30' off the side, spun around, and wore em out. Today's technology is the ol' school killer. Techniques change, presentation changes, seeing them lie down pre-spawn = win. :) I am getting an 1198si to compliment my 898si next month, and I promise, she won't say $hit. She knows. She agrees.
If you need more help my friend, hit me up, we can take a tour. :)
