Got a problem with my trailer lights. The whole left side of lights are dead. I haven't checked anything yet. I'm asking where to start and what to look for.
Find where the sides split. Most likely the connecter
Gewber
Or a bulb burned out on that side.
You calling me a gewber? That's worst than the kettle calling the skillet black.
Look under your hood on your truck.....there is a big black box that should say main load center or someting like that.....take the lid off of it and there are a lot of fuses in there look and you will see trailer lights, left side and right side......this is what I would check first. The fuse panel inside your truck cab has fuses for the truck lights only.
Morris, Take the Thingamabob off and check the dooflotchy. If it's loose, I bet that the lights not working is cause by the whatchamacallit not getting a connection. Hope that helped
Holis on your model truck I think your trailer fuses are under the hood. After you check that, start at your brake light and go forward to the connector to see if you have a bad spot or even a broke wire. I had a brake light ouy and it looked like something off the road jumped up and broke the wire right at the light.
Loose wire
Check bulb... check fuse... check connection... then check power at pig tail...
Fuses 1st, ground second, hot third. Since entire side is out, most likely not a bulb since most have seperate bulbs for turn and tail.
Wannabe...
Read out connector if its ok it will be in the trailer wiring. If its a blown fuse check wiring or a blown bulb.
first hook to another truck to see if truck or boat duuuuuuuuuuuDoh
X2! What he said.
Go get DonDon's 12v test light ,new in the box and check your pig tail on your truck. If you have power then work your way back.
Tush, don't you mean "DonDon's 12V test light, new in the box, instructions never been read, and no clue what it's for so he won't need it anyhow"?
Thought so.
Just doing my part keeping things straight around here.
Wannabe...
that's the one
And your doing a mighty fine job!!
I read the dang instructions, just LAZY
"I read the instruction... After 4 hours of it not working, much cussin, breaking half the parts, and duct taping it back together..."
WB, is that what he was tryin to say?
and your point is? lol
Long as it gets the job done eh DD?
Yep. last resort to
All right, here's what I did. Changed out 2 10 amp fuses under the hood. Turned the lights on and plugged up the trailer. Guess what happened?
It worked like a charm. Now I have an extra trail light just in case.
Thanks guys for the help.
didn't we say to check fuses first..man! you getting like DD
Never mind the fact that the fuses were blown the first place.
Why???
Glad we could help. Next......
Glad ya got it a werkin CHolic
So was it the fuses or the bulbs?
Carry some spare fuses. When it blows again, then you can find the ground fault that's causing it and you won't have to go to the store to get more.
Ain't that right Tush?
Wannabe...
They don't just blow fer nutten.
Don;t think so Tracey
In all my years I have never heard of a fuse getting week with age, maybe the fuse holders but not the fuse itself. As far As fuses you might get one that's bad, but the likelihood of gettin two at the same time is way out there. From what Holic says left side lights are out, which would be parking and brake. First place I would look is the left side tail light. Could be as simple as a bulb, if not he needs to look for a pinched wire. Start with the swing out trailor tongue and works it's way back
Well In my 39 years as a ASE Certified Master Technician....I have replaced a lot of blown fuses on circuits that did not have a thing wrong with them.....replaced the fuse and all was well. By the way....I have also replaced weak circuit breakers before also......they would trip and not hold....put in new one everything fine. Tell me what your explanation is please? Holics says his lights work fine now......if there was a short wouldn't the new fuse blow? Its possible that he might have a intermitant short and if so it will blow the fuse again at some point. And there is a possibility of something wrong with the fuse holder causing a loose or poor connection which would in turn cause heat build up thus blowing the fuse....but if thats the case then it should blow the new one.
I got one to!Attachment 68174
Just saying, two blown fuses the man got issues!
