today was a ok day at the ohio erie canal. using minnows, i tried rigging upside down with 1/64 oz mimic minnow fry jighead. it worked well and i caught a 6" warmouth bass, and a broiler warmouth. then i tried weightless and caught another one, then i tried the "jig head kissing" technique. it looked well and i caught a last one.
I used to keep a few Warmouths in an aquarium. Very cool fish, very aggressive, used to jump out of the water to grab worms.
So my question is, what's a Broiler Warmouth? I even googled it and found nothing.
oh, just my term for warmouth that are too small to fry, hence the name broiler warmouth.Quote:

yeah, and i dont think people know what a warmouth is! when i told one guy what was biting, i metioned warmouth, and he sounded confused for a sec, then went on to somthing else.
While I was bream fishing yesterday caught about 6-8 warmouth but most of them were only about 4-5 inches long. I did catch a couple of larger one and one of them had an 8 in. plastic worm in it's mouth. At first I thought it was hooked but when I pulled it out it didn't have a hook in it.
yeah, they love worms! they literally jump out the water for 'em! when i was reeling in one of my worms, a warmouth jumped and took half the worm!Quote:

Trim the marabou back, by cutting 1/2 the length off, between the hook bend & the longest strands (works especially good if you're getting hits, but no hookups)
Cast the Roadrunner down the bank, especially where there's rocks or stumps/roots ... and keep it out away from the shoreline, in water that's a couple of feet deep, or more. Stairstep rock banks, or cliff wall banks are good areas to try (if present), if you're fishing from a boat.
There may be even bigger Warmouth, out a little deeper (and in the same areas where you're catching the smaller ones) .... ;)

you know, maybe i will try that! but, where could i find a marabou roadrunner? where i fish at, there is too much current for most lures, and too little space, so thats why i stopping fishing there for a while. the only reason i came back was because of "the how do you use your minnows?" post i made.Quote:

I think they run about $2.75 for a 2pk at my local bait store, and about the same at Wal-Mart.
If the current is that swift, you might even consider a 1/8oz size. But, if you want to use 1/16 ... be sure and cast towards the same way the water is flowing, so that you're bringing the lure back towards you against the current. This is the natural way a baitfish would be swimming, so your bait would look "natural" to the fish.
Where exactly, on the Erie Canal, do you fish ?? I'd like to Google Earth the location & check it out. I might be better able to help, if I understand more about "what/where" you're fishing.

got 1 better pappy, we use warmouth for catfishing. What we do is night stalk them on very rocky shores and use a head lamp, we find them and use our secret bait. Nightcrawlers lol on a 1/32oz size 8 hook. And we jig it in front of rocks and stumps. Sometimes at night you catch them patroling the rocks for food...In the day time they hide under the rocks so we jig every rock. Its fun on ultra lite rods..we caught about 6 dozen other day. in between 4-6inches. Bought me a poney mold other day im gonna try the charteruse thing.
Anyone have a pic of a Warmouth , while bass fishing I been catching a dark fish looks a lot like a gill but larger ?? getem on plastic worm and plastic jerk bait. >>>

Had to get in this Warmouth Thread ... The water level is just right and they have been tearing up my 1/4 oz spinner bait Bass does not have a chance to get it (well a few have) ... Attached Picture is 28 (1 "Chub") and have caught in the last 3 trips 75 or more .. have carried the Grand Kids a couple of times and they have had a ball with them ... a lure such as the "Road Runner" style would stay hung up in these waters but it a excellent Lure for them ... I have had some that weighted close to 1.5 #.

Yep ! JSC , That's the one's I have been catching while bass fishing , Been using 4 and 5 inch stick plastic with no weight , They knock the fire out of it.
