What would be the best type mold/mold material to make a very good Bobby Garland Baby Shad. Not looking to sale baits, just want ot make my own. Thanks.CF
I would say either an RTV mold or a resin mold of some sort
Would it need to be a two piece mold? How would You make it a two tone mold? Thanks.CF
I would use Clear Cast resin and a one piece mold. I'm working on one now so ill post when I'm done.
I made one out of plaster of paris that turned otu ok I just dont have the plastic yet to try it out
I would think the tail would be a bear to pour. Pop
Yeah, That is what I was thinking Pop. How can You make a one piece mold that would not produce a tail with a flat top? I sure ain't the pro here and am trying to learn all I can before I get into this. the BGBS is My favorite bait and would love to learn how to make My own. The initial cost of tools and materials might be kinda high but as high as those baits are in price, it would not take long to cover the cost of production. CF
Ditto, the BGBS has proven itself to be my altime favorite, want to follow up also.
You make a hand pour it will have to be a top pour with the back side of the bait up extend the tail lenght about 1/2 inch so material will flow it won't compeletly fill up the best way is to use to small table spoons metal ones to layer the color's in that You desire.
Here is what I came up with.
Here is the mold.
here are a couple I made from a pop mold, I have lots of trouble trying to pour such small baits by hand, especially the tails. maybe I need to spoon feed them lol. I caught crappie on them so I know they work
they are looking nice! :) i recently got things to pour, but i haven't done any yet.
I made some more and they look pretty dang good. I will try and get pics but my camera does not have good quality. I finally figured the best way to do my molds but now I have run out of the material and will have to spend more money on new mold material before I can get what I want.
here are some new baits I poured up today.
they are all lookin great!i so want to start pouring with the things i got so far.maybe sometime this week i'll do some pouring.too tired and lazy right now.i so want to make molds! :D
bwillaub what did you use to pour those small tails and also what type of resin allpurpose?
i made some molds out of POP just to try them. i made them just as Bwillaub made his resin mold. I then melted some Plastic worms I had left from My bass fishing days and poured into the molds. One side looks perfect but the other side cools with a big sump into it or i end up overfilling to make sure the tail fills and it looks like something My dog did. Any suggestions? Might need to try a two piece but can You pour two colors in a two piece homemade mold? Thanks.CF
crappiefarmer, some of mine were made out of pop molds as well. the best thing I have found to do is make my batter a little more wet than normal, not so wet that it wont dry but wet enough to dry out very smooth. If you get it real smooth and flat, when you pour them you can over fill them a little and then take something smooth and flat and press flat against the pop while the plastic is still hot. This will push the excess plastic off tot he side and you should be able to peel the trim off easily or you can get one of those real small sewing cutters that looks like a pizza cutter and once you lay them on a flat surface you can run it up the sides and the excess will slice right off of it. For two colors you can pour just a little of one color in each cavity and then top them all off with another color.
crappiefarmer I forgot to mention. You can pour two colors in a two piece. Just get both colors hot and pour one color in one side and then close the mold and pour in the other color. Let the first color cool just a few seconds so it does not run when you put them together but dont let it cool so much that it wont bond good.
I found some more interesting information. Some of these old post are ready chock-full guys and I find it very interesting on some of the mold making that was going on. Take a look at the pictures that some of the baits they are fantastic looking not to mention they look very similar to some of the stuff that we are having made now. I promise I won't dig anymore about. Ha ha.
snakeRiver pours some nice two tone baby shad stingers....I have bought some from him and they look great, hope to try them out shortly.
I use to have some pictures of some nice ones I made out of rtv molds but think I deleted them
found this old post of mine when I first started with pop mold, it is ugly stuff ha ha

some of those plastic baits are very interesting. I went to that post I noticed that they AV Shad Stinger body with the long tails like 4 inches is the whole plastic baits size those look very interesting. I just looked at your plastic baits. I found some in there that I would like to have made into molds were did you not want any of this stuff used I definitely enjoyed reading a little bit from crappy day. It's good to read some of his old post or comments. Hopefully we can bring some of this stuff back out into the open and work with it more I would like to know what materials that you guys use to make your molds. Of course this is not going to be a hot looking baits but it's not post to be it's post to be for something most likely for your own personal use, and again I would love to have this stuff made in two aluminum flat molds.we are going to take half of my baby Shad Stinger mold and make some plastic in it in the oven to see what everyone thinks of course you will not have a top to it but there might be other applications that we did not think about I will mess with this tomorrow. If I get time.
some of my old pop molds I cut and glued bait pieces together and then made the mold around them and them some of the baits I drew on the finished pop mold and used a dremmel tool to carve it out. I caught fish on the baits but it was a very very very time consuming process, one that I never want to do again ha ha. However for making a first design it works and then you can have the aluminum pros shape it up better in an aluminum mold
