Anybody on here go after redears, shell crackers, chinquepins (what ever they are called here) around the DFW area? If they are in the lakes here, do they get big? Used to catch 'em up to 2 lbs in LA. Miss the fun.

Kenny, I grew up in Lafayette La and fished the Atchafalaya Basin under and around the I-10 bridge. You are talking about the Bull Bream and no I have not seen those anywhere in Texas that I have fished. I remember getting into them with my dad right before I left for basic Training in 1987. We caught about 40 of them 1-2 pounds each. Wow, that was a blast. Anything you see here is going to look like a baby compared to them. You can find a big one here and there but nothing like those. I would love to "Accidentally" drop a few hundred in a few lakes around here! haha. Basically if you fillet what you catch around here you will have a plate full of fish nuggets.
Been there many times. I grew up just north of Natchitoches. Used to catch them good ol' big 'uns! You ought to have them out there in Tyler, especially in Fork. I went to basic in 1983. I retired at Fort Polk in 2016. Just an old tread head. Like what you are doing for our comrades. Gonna be boiling up some bugs this weekend, then go after them sac-a-lait!
ah man, I love me some mud bugs. Thank you for your service sir. I joined the Army to see the world and got stationed at Fort Polk, 5 DIV INF, the Red Diamonds. Was never so disappointed in my life! haha. Got stationed 1.5 hours from my house.Quote:

I've caught some real nice bluegill and longear when I'm not trying to catch them. Greens. Maybe some others. Benbrook, Weatherford, Cleburne, Alvarado, Eagle Mtn and Worth (docks), and JP is where I've caught most of them. A couple of those got some gooduns in there. The others aren't bad. I've heard Weatherford isn't as good anymore though. I plan on finding out. I've stumbled into some off the Isle pier at Ray Bob in the summer. Lewisville near the office/pier 121. Got into a bunch on Whitney one time about 20 years ago lol. Those are ones that stick out in memory. When I try to find and catch em on foot, it don't go quite as planned most times. It's not often that I do though.
not many red ears in these parts best i can tell you , i do know a spot north of town that we ketch a few over a pound but to be sure i aint sending anyone there as its the only spot i seen a big one .
the best bream spot i know in texas for large bream is Fairfield . but i seen some good ones come out of some east texas lakes . closer in to dfw bull bream are not easy to find .
i have a few private lakes i hit that have nice bream and at times in some spots i have seen folks do well on 9 inch fish . i know a bud hits em an Arlington and takes some ok size ones home . and i have a bud on grapevine right now into some pretty nice bluegill shallow as well .
Amon G on the clear water side is flat full of eater size fish btw in the timber in the summer about 14 foot down .
and yes whitney has some good ones in it as well back when as i managed quite few ketchn striper bait .
and there my friends is a short quick bream report ….
Those red ear are a special fish and them big'uns put up a great fight....
We have a small lake down hear that has quite aahh few but not many over a lb....
I've been try'n to get over there but those crappie keep calling my name......
There are crappie in that lake too but it's a bit rough to pattern a good cooler of'em......
I love to fish for bluegill and other bream with an ultra-lite rod. Even the small ones give a nice fight on a small rod.
I started fishing for them last week at my slip with an ultra-lite rod combo. Have caught some that were larger than my hand using pieces of hot dog and crappie nibbles. Trouble is the cats like the same bait so it's usually a mixed bag,. I caught a few that might approach one pound but nothing that would approach two pounds.
Yeah, throw brer rabbit into THAT briar patch!! Which Brigade? I was there in 5th ID myself. Was in tanks, though. 1986-off and on until they became 2nd AD, then went to JRTC.Quote:
