Which works best regular sonar or DI when fishing brush piles & why? Anyone use SI on trolling motor?
I normally use a split screen with those two on, but it's hard to say why. With 2D it is easier (for me) to spot my jig and control the depth. DI can really show fish if you get on top of a bunch and it is pretty neat. DI gives a really good image of brush when you cross over it at a steady speed, but if you are sitting still, you may do better with 2D
I use SI all the time on the bow, the areas where I normally fish are close enough to move from spot to spot with the trolling motor. I like to cast jigs so when marking brush piles and stake beds I want to place a marker as close as possible, I've found this to be easier using SI if I'm off my waypoint by 15' it will still show.
DI (or SI) for finding the brush ...because fans beams have more coverage ...
2d for fishing the brush ...because the cone beam can keep you right on top of it ...

DI and SI have fan shaped thin beams ...which must be used with the boat moving to render the imaging into a discernable image ... Basically the boat must pass over (or by) the structure to make an image ...Quote:

This is not to say DI (or SI) can't be used sitting stationary ... It just won't make pretty internet pictures sitting still ... and it's less likely fish will be in the thin slice beam sitting still ...

Rickie I have been having trouble when fishing brush piles knowing where they are in relation to seeing them on the screen in DI. So what you are saying is that in 2d I might be able to set up over the top of them better as far as watching the screen? I am fishing in 15 to 18 ft. of water.
There is more likelihood (of brush showing in the 200kHz 2d displayed image) to actually be directly under the xducer ...Quote:

Conversely, in a DI Sonar beam, the brush can be anywhere in that fan beam (as CP explained) ...

I FISH BP ALL THE TIME,I USE 2D AND DI EACH HELP THE OTHER,AS FOR KNOWING WHERE BP IS ,YOU SHOULD HAVE YOUR DUCER A LITTLE TILTED TO THE FRONT,THIS HELP IN TELLING WHERE BP IS BY TURNING TM LEFT AND IF IT START SHOWING UP THAN IT IS LEFT,AS YOU TURN MOTOR AND WATCH DIRECTION YOU KNOW WHERE BP IS AND WHEN YOU ARE IN MIDDLE OF IT THE 2D SCREEN WILL GET THICK AND THE HIGHEST SPOT ON UNIT WHILE DI WILL SHOW IF FISH ARE IN IT,WIFE AND I FISH SIDE BY SIDE BY TURNING TM I SOMETIMES HAVE TO TELL HER THAT JIG IS TOO HIGH THEN SHE DROPS DOWN TO WHERE FISH OR TO TOP OF BRUSH,YES WE STILL MARK OUR LINES,BUT BEFORE THAT I CAST TO PILES FIRST WITH A MARKER JUST UP WIND OF BRUSH SO THAT WHEN I GET OVER BRUSH MARKER WILL BE IN FRONT OF ME AN NOT SIDE OR BEHIND ME,IF YOU SET 2D UP RIGHT YOU CAN SEE FISH MOVING UP AND DOWN IN BRUSH UNLESS NEW BRUSH WITH LEAVES WHICH DI WILL TELL YOU AFTER YOU LEARN TO INTERPRET IT WELL,SO TO ANSWER QUESTION USE BOTH,NOW TRUE DI WORKS MUCH BETTER THAN BLENDED DI WHICH I DO NOT CARE MUCH FOR ON FRONT
