How much rope do you guys use when pulling chains to slow boat down? I am thinking about getting two 5' chains for each side of the back of the boat. I have a Grizzly Tracker 1754sc with 60 hp. I have trouble spider rigging because I can't seem to get the boat to go slow enough.

Thought about perhaps getting a 2gal bucket and drilling holes until it slows down?
I have 2 five ft chains an I have bout 50 ft of rope on each but have only used bout half of that. That was in a 15-20mph tail wind an that slowed me down enuff to catch'em! It was one of those days that the weatherman lied to us agin. 2 drift socks also work. I've been with guys usin them an they worked as well.
I have a 19ft tracker and two 6ft chains on 25 ft of rope each, does me good in wind to 20mph, hook both chains together on 50ft of rope in 30mph wind will slow me down to .3 to .4mph
Rule of thumb 1' of chain to each foot of the length of your boat.Example 20' boat 20' of chain.Rope only determines how much chain you need to drag to slow boat.More wind more chain dragging.
Capp is correct with chain length. Rope depends on the depth of the water. 30' of water needs more rope. 6' of water needs less rope.
Respectfuly, i have to disagree, two weeks a go on lake washington i had both chains out on 25 ft ropes in 10fow and wind was puhing me at .7 to .8mph, changed rope length to 50ft and it slowed my drift to .3 to.4mph .Quote:

I run two 6 ft lengths of 1/2 in chain. One on each side with 40 ft of rope. Tie a overhand loop knot about every 5 ft. Use a Caribeaner to attach. Makes it a lot easier to adjust length of rope. If I put all my rope out in 15 mph it will come to complete stop.
I run 5 foot sections, 4 of them. My mainstay is 25ft of rope with 5 foot of 5/16 chain on the end of it, have 2 of these and run 2 most of the time when pulling chains. When the wind picks up I ad 5 foot of 1/4 chain to the end of each set up, this holds a 19.5 BassCat in any fishable water. "Pulling Chains" is just that, your chains need be set for your rig. You want to be able to pull them without having to turn the trolling motor way up. Its all relative to your rig, the weight in said rig, the trolling motor you have. Only time I worry about more rope is when I am in water more than 20 foot deep, which is very rare for me. Socks are a pain in the butt, I pull my chains through whatever is there and socks just wont do that.
Also, this set up stows away in an 18V Dewalt cordless drill box, very easy to stow and takes up very little room.
