I finally found a spot that we have caught a couple nice sized crappie couple little ones. We are fishing from the shore in a canal we are fishing by the locks. They bite on minnows n not a thing else. Tried jigs and bettle spins both with crappie nibbles on . They dont bite often. All day fishing and my son caught 3 me none. My question is what could I try on them next? What do you guys use to help with getting them to bite?

How deep is it there??? IMO: They are going deeper as their instinctive migratory behavior says they will in the fall and winter months. You're going to have to get a boat or find someone with a boat or get a rod and reel combination that will cast a good deal farther in order to get to the 20 to 30 foot water... and right on the bottom too.
minners are your best bet....they just haven't moved in there yet...try to find some docks or pilings to fish around. The older the better. Good luck!
Hard for me to tell the depth. But I guess 15 feet. When my son caught the first 1 he said feel how cold it is. It felt cool to the touch. He was only about 5 feet deep. The only pilings around is a bridge and we fished it hard. We found them up by the locks. Gonna go deep tomorrow and also deep by the bridge. Thanks for the help. It sounds like you're doing everything right. That's the problem with bank fishing a place like that. When it's good, it's good; but no option for Plan B when they don't show.
It can be very discouraging. I guess that's why we call it fishing, and not "catching" LOL.
It could also be they're suspended somewhere along the pilings, and you gotta get the depth just right.
I've only used minnows, and drift. Of course I'm a 5-10 fish guy, not like the regulars here that catch 30 or more.
I want to start trolling, if I ever get out. Now I have company comming to town for a week...................

you are talking bridge, pilings, locks - could you give a little clue as to where your at and maybe some of us can assist you better ?
I live in Saint Cloud. There is a lake called Lake Cypress. Instead of turning down the dirt road to get to the lakes boat ramp. Keep going down Canoe Creek Road another 3/4 of a mile and you will see the bridge and locks. It is on your way to Kenansville (Lake Marian).
There are some nice crappie there but we just dont catch a bunch.3 or 4 a day. If I am catching some wouldnt that mean there are more of them?
I'm sometimes surprised at how shallow crappie can bite...even when it gets cold. Those fish are probably scattered and you'll get a few each time you go. That's not too shabby. Thx for your report.
