I know this will get mixed responses, but how important do you think Jig Head colors are? I asked a very knowledgeable and experienced fisherman this last year and his response was "It is only as important to the fish as it is to the fisherman"......:confused:
I use to have every color in my bag. Now I primarily use White, Yellow & Chartreuse for trolling. I have begun to use unpainted when shooting docks as I leave most of the paint on the dock anyway.
for the most part. I used to think jig head color was important. I fished with Terry Whaley on Weiss last February and he only used unpainted jig heads that day. Said he hasn't found it makes much difference to the crappie. We caught fish all day long on them. I use painted heads when I'm fishing jigs real slow (like under a bobber). Figure the crappie might take a closer look when the jig is moving slow. Since I pour my own it is also costs less to use unpainted heads.
I'm no expert but I think the logic behind red/pink jig heads is maybe to imitate gill plates and black being another popular color to imitate eye color...just my thoughts. I've always had good luck with these color combinations with both hair/feather/plastic jigs
just me but I think it is important as the color body you choose all the way to what color you dot the eyes especially when the bite is tough.
I use all colors, even unpainted ones. Very few times did I think the fish were that particular. I feel that the grub body is the key.
Look's like Talquin got hit again with storms last nite. Talked to LTL and they said no one was out fishing today.

sometimes colors matter and sometimes not, my thing is its better to have them and not need them. On the hill, blue,chart,white,green and no color will get you thru.
Tim I've told you before it's not the color of the jig head it's the color of the shirt your wearing, Bubble gum pink shirt, acid rain yellow shirt, john deere green shirt and so forth....... Show them the the picture I know you still got with the pink shirt large crappie on bubble gum. Now you know I'am not and experienced fisherman but I do dress well........Quote:

Unpainted heads are the primary in my tackle assortment...
I have just started using reds because a whole lot of researching has suggested it's possibilities of an imitation of this or that...
So far, i see no significant effect worthy of all the special attention to such a small detail. Grub color makes up 80% of the appearance and that is what i focus on the most. I caught a lot of fish last year and almost all were on unpainted heads. Thats my personal researching results. I think that fish focus mostly on the action making the tail the most important color and the body a close second.
