It certainly slowed it down and the crappie are not in the shallows right now. People are still catching them, but they have to work at it. Good luck on your trip and I hope it picks up during your stay.:)
Look for crappie to be staged in 8' to 12' of water in the creek channel leading to spawning areas. If you find them, and they cooperate, you can load the boat. Especially check any sharp bends in the creek chennel. Nature is telling those fish it's time, and they're just waiting for the correct water temperature to make the move.
I'm pre-fishing for a guide trip Friday, thats where we will start in 10' away from south banks with a little wood, then by evening cork & jig 3' of water to see if we can locate some males.
Gambliman is right!!! The fish are waitng for the right temps to make there move. But keep in mind that Eufaula is a like 7 lakes combined!!! I have caught spawning fish in March and in June!!! Also remeber that the females only stay on the nest for a 36 hr period where they lay there eggs and leave!!! But they don't always lay at one time they will lay and leave several times until they are done!! If the weather conditions or lake level aren't right they won't lay at all!! They will hold there eggs!!!How often do you catch females that are on the bank spawning? If I am catching spawning fish 90% of them are males not females!!! The females are with in a 2ft depth of where they lay there eggs and are real close in open water to the nest!! I have caught the females out from the banks when my partner was beating the buck bushes catching the males!!! Any thoughts? EB
Hey EB; You made it back from Arizona? Have you got on the shallow males yet? They are running bigger on average this year!! Yeah, I agree on the females being fairly close to the bedding areas, exactly why I like to work an area with cork / jig or a closespin spinner/ roadrunner anything to cover some water till you find them grouped up....then its on!
Do the males and females reach the same size ? Or are they like LMBass, where the female grow much larger ?
Oh the females are bigger in crappie too. Most 3lbs crappie caught are female and man do I love females in any fashion. LOL
Thank you gamblinman for the advise. I definitely need it. May be old in years but young in fishing.
Yes we are back from AZ. What a great baseball trip. But wouldn't want to live there not enough water for me!!! But two good crappie lakes like Lake Roosevelt. Sad to say I have been out fishing one day for about 4 hrs last sunday!! Only kept four over pound on the north end!!! For me the males have to be hittin it hard on the spawn for me to come off spider-rigging. But i love to catch'em with a jig and a cork it is my favorite way!!! You know I fish with the lake Eufaula crappie master ( Mike "Slabman" Reynolds). So I have a good Idea when those fish are full blown spawn from gaines to mill creeks!!! As far as male to female size . There has never been a crappie tournamnet won in the spring on Eufaula with males caught off the bank that I know of, I have won three, and they were all female fish,spider-rigging!!I love to catch those 14 inch class fish!!
