What a difference a day makes on Cane Creek

Hello to all

It has been a difficult year for me on Cane Creek. After being shut out in the crappie tournament Saturday on Cane Creek I went back on Sunday and caught the first limit of crappie that I have caught this year. I recall two year ago I would catch a limit of crappie give them away and then catch another limit, so why can I not catch fish this year?

Well on Saturday I spent some time talking with a couple of fellows who are from Faulkner county where I learned to float a jig under a cork. These guy had caught fish floating a jig but had not entered the tournament. I told them that I had produced a lot of fish floating a jig in the past and when asked why I stopped I could not give them a good answer. I told them that I have tried a few time this fall but never long enough to be productive.

I told myself Saturday night that I would go back on Sunday and float the jig and stay with it. I would try different color at various depths and see what happens. To make long story short I had a great day with 15 nice crappie with four over 3lb the largest came in at 3lb 6ounces (see photo).

Way to go Lucky, you know I asked you the same question a week or two ago. Last year you were the envy of everyone on Cane Creek with that floating a jig method. I had seen the carhart man catching those fish, was wondering why you weren't doing it. Glad to see you're back. Keep up the good work, and I'm going to have to practice that technique some more.

I told ya'll all that was need was for me to go home for them to start biting.

Can you elaborate on the floating a jig technique? Is it just tying a jig on and attaching a bobber? but it cant be that easy or everyone would be doing it. Whats the technique?

This thread is a great one, in my opinion.

It has also reminded me of past success using a jig below a float.

An older fisherman friend of mine once told me to be sure to only use a round float. He always used a weighted float to help him cast further.

He would fish a minnow or a jig below the round float.

He said that after you cast it out, reel it in real slow, and the round float would naturally bob up and down as you were reeling. This would give your bait or lure a slight up and down motion that the fish liked.

A longer, skinnier float would just cut through the water and would not give the up and down action, so it was not as effective.

It has proven to be true for me.

If you think about it, it is kinda the same as trolling, except your lure is away from the boat.
